Exiled President Back in Honduras Preaching Peace

This isn’t the first visit Manuel Zelaya has made to Honduras since a 2009 coup toppled his presidency and he was exiled, but he may be able to stick around this time. Zelaya cut a deal with the current regime and returned to Tegucigalpa calling for peaceful resistance.

“The problem of poverty, of corruption, of the great challenges of Latin American societies won’t be resolved through violence, but through more democracy,” he said.

After Zelaya’s ouster, Honduras was condemned by international leaders and expelled from the Organization of American States. It didn’t take long, however, for international pressure to lift and for world leaders to endorse the post-coup regime.  —PZS

Mr Zelaya’s return became possible after he signed an agreement with his successor, Mr Lobo, in Colombia on Monday.

The accord, negotiated by the Venezuelan and the Colombian presidents, also prepares the way for Honduras’s re-entry in the Organisation of American States.
