Al-Qaida’s No. 2 Leader Is Dead

Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, al-Qaida’s second in command and trusted confidant of Osama bin Laden, has been killed in Waziristan, Pakistan’s tribal region, a U.S. government official announced Saturday. The State Department had placed a $1 million reward on his head.

Saturday’s announcement, in disclosing that Rahman, a Libyan, had been killed on Aug. 22, contained few details. However, The New York Times reported Saturday that the al-Qaida leader had died in a strike from a CIA aerial drone. —ARK

Al Qaeda’s No. 2 boss, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, has been killed in Pakistan, dealing another devastating blow to the terrorist network, a U.S. official said Saturday.

... His death came on the same day an unmanned CIA drone bombed the Waziristan area.

The U.S. State Department had offered a $1 million reward for information leading to the capture of al Rahman.
