Global Zero Pushes for a Nuke-Free World
Posted on Dec 9, 2008
The founders of Global Zero, including Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev and Sir Richard Branson, want to do for nuclear disarmament what Al Gore and other environmentalists did for climate change. While the vast majority of the world’s citizens seem to favor going nukeless, the issue has been confined to the back burner.
Global Zero consists of 100 leading figures seeking practical steps towards nuclear abolition and gaining public support for that goal.
They say the risk of nuclear weapons spreading to unstable countries or getting into the hands of extremist groups is too great.
The group will hold meetings in Moscow and Washington in the coming days.
