McCain’s Attention Deficit
Posted on Apr 29, 2008
While the spotlight is starting to singe the Democrats, it’s true that Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have gotten heaping doses of attention compared with the supposed media darling, John McCain. Here’s one indication: The covers of Time and Newsweek have featured the face of an Obama or a Clinton eight times since Super Tuesday.
McCain’s mug showed up only twice in that time, and even then only on Newsweek in the two weeks after the Feb. 5 contests.
Time has twice split the page to feature both Clinton and Obama, an effect Newsweek has avoided. Only one spouse, Michelle Obama, got a cover shot in the weeks since Super Tuesday. In that time, Barack Obama has had a solo cover three times, though he was shown once as a baby, once in his youth and once from behind. Hillary Clinton has had the cover to herself twice since Feb. 5.
Obviously all three candidates have gotten plenty of ink for some time now, but scoring the cover of one of America’s top two newsweeklies is a pretty big deal in politics.
The Time cover archive can be found here, and you can flip through old Newsweek issues here.
