
A government probe of Israel’s 2006 war in Lebanon has not only found that the war was a blunder but revealed “serious failings” in the political and military leadership of the country. The panel criticized the unnecessary loss of life and found that Israel’s ability to deter its enemies had been seriously damaged.

The report recommends “systematic and profound” changes in thinking in the political and military leaderships if Israel is to face up to future challenges.
Israel cannot survive without the belief that it has “the political and military leadership, military capabilities, and social robustness” to deter aggressors, the report says.
Mr Olmert’s [Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s] aides said the criticism in the report was not as harsh as they had been preparing for.
