
Ramping up already escalating tensions between the two nations, Syrian military officials claimed Thursday that Israeli warplanes violated Syrian airspace in the wee hours of the morning, prompting Syrian air defense forces to open fire until the planes turned around—an account Israel has yet to confirm or deny.

A Syrian military spokesman said the Israeli warplanes had flown into Syrian airspace at around 0100 local time on Thursday morning, [the official news agency] Sana reported.
“The Israeli enemy aircraft infiltrated into the Arab Syrian territory through the northern border, coming from the Mediterranean heading toward the eastern region, breaking the sound barrier,” he said.
