Bush to Miers: Don’t Talk

President Bush has told his former White House counsel, Harriet E. Miers, not to even appear before the House Judiciary Committee in its investigation into the firings of U.S. attorneys, the committee chairman said Wednesday. The panel was to hear from Miers on Thursday.
Rep. John D. Conyers, the Michigan Democrat who heads the committee, said he was told in a letter, dated Tuesday, from Miers’ lawyer that she would not appear.  Conyers said the lawyer was reacting to a letter from Fred F. Fielding, the current White House counsel, asserting that “Ms. Miers has absolute immunity from compelled Congressional testimony as to matters occurring while she was a senior adviser to the president.”
