At Least 8 Die in Turkish Clash

A raid on a Turkish military camp by Kurdish separatist rebels left at least seven Turks and one rebel dead on Monday and seven more soldiers injured, according to the BBC.  The attack took place in the eastern town of Tunceli in the Pulumar region and is being attributed to the controverial Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

The attack comes amid speculation Turkey may launch an incursion into Iraq to tackle Kurdish rebels following recent rebel operations inside Turkey.

On Monday Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul told EU officials Turkey had “every right” to take action against the rebels.

The latest violence is bound to fuel support for a military operation into northern Iraq, says the BBC’s Sarah Rainsford, in Istanbul.
