U.S. combat deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan now equal the 2,973 lives lost during the Sept. 11 attacks. Also, the number of civilians slain in Iraq in the last month reached an unprecedented level: 6,599 dead.

And, oh yeah: Not only are U.S. troop levels in Iraq unlikely to decrease any time soon, but U.S. commanders say even more troops are needed.
