D.C. Cardinal: Gay Civil Unions Acceptable
Posted on Jun 11, 2006
The leader of the Catholic Church in Washington, D.C., lent his support to same-sex civil unions, but not same-sex marriage.
Cardinal Theodore McCarrick says he could support same-sex civil unions, but not same-sex marriage.
McCarrick said believes marriage is the union of a man and a woman, and that altering that definition would denigrate society.
The Washington archbishop appeared on CNN Wednesday night to respond to the Senate’s rejection of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
Cardinal McCarrick’s comments put him in the progressive camp of the Catholic Church.
