Most Americans think that the big government entitlement programs—Social Security and Medicare—are a good thing. But young and old part company, according to a new Pew report, over the current effectiveness of the programs and what to do about it.

Older Americans drawing Social Security checks basically have a hands-off attitude, while younger people, looking down the road, say the program needs major changes or a complete overhaul.

But a majority of people of all ages have a message for the politicians: Don’t be cutting into benefits to reduce the federal budget deficit. —ARK

New and Improved Comments

We are launching a major overhaul of our comments section.

In addition to more robust spam filtering and moderation, new features include the ability to rate other comments, sort how they are displayed and respond directly via e-mail or in a thread.

Unfortunately, commenters will lose their existing Truthdig identities. It's a pain, we know, but on the plus side you will now be able to log in with a plethora of options, including Google, Twitter, Facebook and Disqus accounts.

Before launching this system we spent months in discussion with our top commenters. We listened to the feedback and we hope you like what we've come up with.

If young people really think that, then they are fools.  They have no idea now easy it is to lose your job or not find one that pays well.  They have no idea how easy it is to get sick or have an accident.  They have no idea they will be single moms and dads and have to take care of elderly parents.

Instead of assuming they are going to be famous and/or rich, they ought to understand that life is actually difficult and never turns out the way you expect.  Everybody I know would be living under a bridge in Florida without Social Security.

NO truthdig NO.
Both the young and old loves Social Security.
It is one of the best beneficial and efficient government programs.
It is unfortunate that the MSM only allows for detractors to write negative lies about SS.
The super rich class wants to privatize Social Security and cut benefits in order to raid its Trust Fund for more looting for themselves and not to balance the Federal Budget as they claim
If they really care about the deficit, they wouldn’t had cut taxes for the super-rich instead of taxing them more to reduce the deficit.

“fabricator of useless articles”—Social Security—where are we going with this one? I dread to think!
