You Can’t March if You’re Dead

Posted on Jun 5, 2011
AP / Ariel Schalit

Pro-Palestinian protesters try to rescue a wounded man after he was shot by Israeli troops along the border between Israel and Syria.

For the second time in three weeks, Israeli forces opened fire on pro-Palestinian protesters, killing as many as 20 (that figure comes from Syrian television by way of the BBC, and is disputed by Israel).

Israel Defense Forces shot at a crowd marching Sunday from the Syrian border toward the Israel-controlled Golan Heights in a demonstration marking the 44th anniversary of the 1967 Arab-Israeli Six-Day War.

Last month, the IDF fired at demonstrators on Israel’s Independence Day and Palestinians’ “Nakba Day” (“Day of Catastrophe”).

The IDF reported that soldiers first tried to ward off demonstrators with verbal warnings and shots fired into the air.

Avital Leibovich of the Israeli military is quoted by the BBC as saying, “This is an attempt by the Syrian regime to divert the world’s attention from the Syrian bloodshed that has been taking place in recent weeks.”

Apparently it’s OK to shoot civilians if you’re tricked into it by another country that shoots civilians ... or something.

The demonstration was just one of many that took place in and around Israel on Sunday, and was not totally unexpected. The Wall Street Journal reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on the IDF to act with “resolve” to prevent Palestinians from reaching the Golan Heights and to protect Israeli towns and cities. But is it going too far when “resolve” means killing protesters?  —BF and PZS

Israel’s military said its soldiers shouted warnings in Arabic and fired warning shots in the air, before aiming at the legs of those who had reached the fence.

After live gunfire failed to disperse the crowds, Israeli troops fired volleys of tear gas over the border. Many people fled while others lay on the ground.

Syrian TV said more than 300 protesters had been wounded.

Israel: A Choice To Kill

By Chris Floyd

“June 07, 2011——- I watched them marching toward the border. Row upon row of them in the hot, bright sun. They marched without guns, without tanks and missiles—although some, like the shepherd boy David, did pick up a few rocks to hurl into the impossible distance.

I watched them stream down the green hill toward the heaps of dirt and wire. I saw them, old and young, walk toward the occupied land. I saw them come closer— close enough for the heavily-armed occupying force to have them in range.

From a distance—behind the barbed wire, with the occupiers, where the cameras that showed the scene were set —I heard the dull pops and parps of the guns as they fired. I saw the marchers kept streaming down the hill, although the first wave was now breaking in disarray. I heard the guns again. I saw some marchers fall, others scramble back, and still more coming down.

Pop. Pop. Parp. The dull sounds, intermittent, careful. The bullets whizzed across the distance—the impossible distance, which no stone could traverse. The bullets threw up clouds of dirt, they struck flesh. I saw bodies twisting and going down. The march became a rescue party. The dead and wounded were lifted onto sheets and stretchers as the bullets kept coming: dull, intermittent, careful. Pop. Pop. Parp.

Finally, as many lay dead, many lay bleeding in bright, hot sun, finally, across the distance, from behind the barbed wire and hot-barrelled weapons, I watched the canisters of tear gas sailing through the air, trailing streams of smoke. They landed on the dirt and the green grass, and spewed their painful, irresistible fog.

Now, at last, the marchers—who had kept coming in the face of the bullets—turned and fled. Carrying the dead, the dying and bleeding, they ran back up the green hill.

Then suddenly the scene shifted to an anonymous government office, where a comely young spokeswoman, speaking crisp, American-accented English, explained that these unweaponed marchers walking in the hot, bright sun posed such an overwhelming threat to the heavily-armed occupying forces behind the walls of barbed wire that there was no alternative, no other choice, but to open fire across the impossible distance that no stone could traverse, to fire into the unarmed crowd, to fire again and again, to watch them twist and fall into the mounds of dirt. No choice. No alternative.

Her appearance on the screen lasted almost as long as the time given to the marchers and their dead. The reporter, who was standing near the border, behind the barbed wire, who had seen it all with his own eyes, dutifully concluded his piece with geopolitical context—one side says this, the other says that, plots and machinations lie behind every public outpouring. But even given all that, even he—speaking as the marchers were fleeing from the noxious clouds behind him—even he could not avoid the obvious question: Why use the tear gas last? Why shoot first? Why fire into the bodies, into the unarmed marchers, and kill them, when all along you were equipped with the proven means to disperse them without death and blood?

dr:  I am well aware of the over 50 million dead as a
result of ww2. I also know that without the efforts of
the red army, I would not be here. You failed to answer my question. Israel is not the only country guilty of colonialism.  The Arab states plus Iran would love to see Israel wiped off the map. When these fascist regimes stop killing their own citizens and renounce war against Israel, then maybe there will be a peaceful solution to the creation of a viable Palestinian state.

And he never will.  Day by day the bad Dr. Quack reveals more and more that he is a White Supremacist.  Today, for the first time, he reveals that he is a Holocaust denier, questioning that it ever occurred and THEN waving the bloody flag that nobody cares about all the other people who died.

His hatred of Jews has been evident but he has hidden behind attacks on “Zionists” and “international bankers” (long-time code word by neo-Nazis for Jews).  Now it’s out in the open: He’s a Holocaust Denier, and that, my friends, is a sure sign of connection to white supremacist groups.

He refuses in the face of ABSOLUTE evidence to accept that the President is a native-born American, and reveals that his REAL problem with Obama is ... that he’s a Black man.  Hence his sarcastic copy-catting of Loo -So-fuluvit’s term “Mocha Savior”—code word for “uppity nigger”—again a view of the white supremacists.

What we have here is a clear cut racist, bigoted troll.

And naturally, the nit-wits here admire him.

“Secular leadership is under awful pressure there.”

Gee, Howard, I wonder whose fault that is? The Lebanese army is not capable of defending Lebanon but Hezbollah is. That is why Israel hates them so much. And if you can explain why Israel tossed a quarter of a million cluster bombs into Lebanon, leaving unexploded bomblets blanketing the ground, when they had already negotiated a truce (with Hezbollah, I’m assuming) and were about to leave then give it your best shot. Even members of the IDF demanded to know, after this humiliating disaster, exactly why Israel had invaded Lebanon in 2006. Their answer was deafening silence and then the humanitarian and public relations disasters of the invasion of Gaza in 2008 and the executions and brutal beating of civilians on that Gaza aid boat in international waters.

And, of course, Israel has the same attitude as America: Noam Chomsky wrote in ‘Imperial Ambitions’ that “Only America would call someone a terrorist for defending their own country.” No, not only America. Israel has been doing it for decades. No doubt the Nazis thought the French Resistance were terrorists too.

The Massacres of 1948

Not Only Deir Yassin

By Guy Erlich, Ha’ir

“According to Yitzhaki, about ten major massacres were committed in the course of the War of Independence (i.e. more than fifty victims in each massacre) and about hundred smaller massacres (of individuals or small groups). According to him, these massacres had an enormous impact on the Arab population, by inducing their (departure) from the country.

Yitzhaki: “For many Israelis it was easier to find consolation in the lie, that the Arabs left the country under orders from their leaders. This is an absolute fabrication. The fundamental cause of their flight was their fear from Israeli retribution and this fear was not at all imaginary. From almost each report in the IDF archives concerning the conquest of Arab villages between May and July 1948 - when clashes with Arab villagers were the fiercest - a smell of massacre emanates. Sometimes the report tells about blatant massacres which were committed after the battle, sometimes the massacres are committed in the heat of battle and while the villages are “cleansed.” Some of my colleagues, such as Me’ir Pa’il, don’t consider such acts as massacres. In my opinion there is no other term for such acts than massacres. This was at the time the rule of the game. It was a dirty war on both sides. This phenomenon spread out in the field; there were no explicit orders to exterminate. In the first phase a village was usually subjected to heavy artillery from distance. Then soldiers would assault the village. After giving up resistance, the Arab fighters would withdraw while attempting to snipe at the advancing forces. Some would not flee and would remain in the village, mainly women and old people. In the course of cleansing we used to hit them. One was “tailing the fugitives,” as it used to be called (“mezanvim baborchim”). There was no established battle procedure as today, namely that when blowing up a house, one has first to check whether civilians are still inside. In a typical battle report about the conquest of a village we find: “We cleansed a village, shot in any direction where resistance was noticed. After the resistance ended, we also had to shoot people so that they would leave or who looked dangerous.

I want to begin by thanking the members of AIPAC the Jewish Zionist community who are here tonight. I am glad that they decided to set aside time to express solidarity with the people of Palestine. I know that you will listen to the tapes and view the recordings of my remarks tonight and you will study them well and hopefully you will realize that you are supporting evil. You see, I too came from a deeply Zionist background, far more Zionist and Jewish than most of you here tonight. My grandfather was a signer on the Israeli declaration of independence, and my father, a general, one of the giants who planned and executed Israel’s most definitive military victories, namely 1948 and 1967. So I know what you were taught and I know what you think. But its time to sweep away the Zionist myths and uncover the truth so that we may all finally live in peace. The myths I will address tonight are the three most common myths:
1. The myth of 1948.
2. The myth of the existential threat of 1967.
3. The myth of the Jewish democracy.

now 9 cheers for Israel.  4 Arab countries invaded Israel in ‘48.  On the radio at that time, these countries advised arab citizens to get out while they would push the Israeli’s into the sea.
they have yet, these countries to make peace with Israel.  save Egypt only.  and that a cold peace, for sure.
so these unabsorbed pal’s should demonstrate against those counries that put them into their present plight.
Israel got out of gaza.  what did they receive, for thanks.  Nothing but missles and rockets.  That is why they had to go back in there.  Let Egypt now take Gaza back.  the gazans are mainly of egyptian stock.  Jordan is 80% palestenian,  they should absorb the remainder.
Lebanon has been just about destroyed from what it was by Hezballah.  Such a shame. Christian community there is now extremely comprimised. Secular leadership is under awful pressure there.

USS Liberty Vet Awarded the Silver Star

Navy Vet Honored, Foiled Israeli Attack

“What’s the difference between murder and massacre?

The answer is Terry Halbardier, whose bravery and ingenuity as a 23-year-old Navy seaman spelled the difference between the murder of 34 of the USS Liberty crew and the intended massacre of all 294.

The date was June 8, 1967; and for the families of the 34 murdered and for the Liberty’s survivors and their families, it is a “date which will live in infamy” — like the date of an earlier surprise attack on the U.S. Navy.

The infamy is two-fold: (1) the Liberty, a virtually defenseless intelligence collection platform prominently flying an American flag in international waters, came under deliberate attack by Israeli aircraft and three 60-ton Israeli torpedo boats off the coast of the Sinai on a cloudless June afternoon during the six-day Israeli-Arab war; and (2) President Lyndon Johnson called back carrier aircraft dispatched to defend the Liberty lest Israel be embarrassed — the start of an unconscionable cover-up, including top Navy brass, that persists to this day.

Given all they have been through, the Liberty survivors and other veterans – who joined Halbardier to celebrate his belated receipt of the Silver Star – can be forgiven for having doubted that this day would ever come. In the award ceremony at the Visalia (California) office of Rep. Devin Nunes, the Republican congressman pinned the Silver Star next to the Purple Heart that Halbardier found in his home mailbox three years ago.

Nunes said, “The government has kept this quiet I think for too long, and I felt as my constituent he [Halbardier] needed to get recognized for the services he made to his country.”

Nunes got that right. Despite the many indignities the Liberty crew has been subjected to, the mood in Visalia was pronouncedly a joyous one of Better (42 years) Late Than Never. And, it did take some time to sink in: Wow, a gutsy congressman not afraid to let the truth hang out on this delicate issue.

Treatment Accorded the Skipper

As we gathered in Congressman Nunes’s office, I could not get out of my head the contrast between this simple, uncomplicated event and the rigmarole that senior Navy officers went through to pin a richly deserved Medal of Honor on another hero of that day, the Liberty’s skipper, Captain William McGonagle.

Although badly wounded by Israeli fire on June 8, 1967, McGonagle was able to keep the bombed, torpedoed, napalmed Liberty afloat and limping toward Malta, where what was left of the bodies of the 34 crewmen killed and the 174 wounded could be attended to.

Do the math: yes, killed and wounded amounted to more than two-thirds of the Liberty crew of 294.

I remembered what a naval officer involved in McGonagle’s award ceremony told one of the Liberty crew: “The government is pretty jumpy about Israel…the State Department even asked the Israeli ambassador if his government had any objections to McGonagle getting the medal.”

When McGonagle received his award, the White House (the normal venue for a Medal of Honor award) was all booked up, it seems, and President Johnson (who would have been the usual presenter) was unavailable. So it fell to the Secretary of the Navy to sneak off to the Washington Navy Yard on the banks of the acrid Anacostia River, where he presented McGonagle with the Medal of Honor and a citation that described the attack but not the identity of the attackers.

Please don’t misunderstand. The Liberty crew is not big on ceremony. They are VERY-not-big on politicians who wink when Navy comrades are killed and wounded at sea.

The first $olution, the most sane one, is a ONE $TATE $OLUTION where ethno-racist Zionism is abandoned for common sense… meaning Jews and Arabs and Christian $ects live together is relative peace… as they once did.

The other $olution is the eventual EVAPORATION of the alleged Holy Land.

“More people have been killed in the name of religion than any other factor and that you can look up.”

We have been through this before.  And I HAVE looked it up.  In fact, it has been a major field of study for me for over 20 years.  And you are wrong.

According to a wide variety of respected historians (including both believers and atheists), the total number of people killed or murdered in all holy wars, Crusades, inquisitions, witch burnings, etc. is between 50 million and 75 million - in all of recorded history.

The number of people killed or murdered directly or as the result of the policies of Lenin, Stalin and Mao (I am even leaving Hitler out, since I know I will get an argument about his being a “Christian,” whcih is not true) is over 100 million - in just 75 years!  Add in Hitler (which I would do, but I know others would not) and we can add another 13 million to that.

You and others can repeat the phony canard about religion having caused more deaths than anything else (and particularly atheism) all you want; but the facts do not support you.

“That ‘there has been an official cover-up without precedent in American naval history.’”

That’s an interesting - and unbelievably absurd - statement, given the Gulf of Tonkin…and maybe even Pearl Harbor.

Rockets, Napalm, Torpedoes & Lie

Israel’s Attack on the USS Liberty, Revisited

“In early June of 1967, at the onset of the Six Day War, the Pentagon sent the USS Liberty from Spain into international waters off the coast of Gaza to monitor the progress of Israel’s attack on the Arab states. The Liberty was a lightly armed surveillance ship.

Only hours after the Liberty arrived it was spotted by the Israeli military. The IDF sent out reconnaissance planes to identify the ship. They made eight trips over a period of three hours. The Liberty was flying a large US flag and was easily recognizable as an American vessel.

A few hours later more planes came. These were Israeli Mirage III fighters, armed with rockets and machine guns. As off-duty officers sunbathed on the deck, the fighters opened fire on the defenseless ship with rockets and machine guns.

A few minutes later a second wave of planes streaked overhead, French-built Mystere jets, which not only pelted the ship with gunfire but also with napalm bomblets, coating the deck with the flaming jelly. By now, the Liberty was on fire and dozens were wounded and killed, excluding several of the ship’s top officers.

The Liberty’s radio team tried to issue a distress call, but discovered the frequencies had been jammed by the Israeli planes with what one communications specialist called “a buzzsaw sound”. Finally, an open channel was found and the Liberty got out a message to the USS America, the Sixth Fleet’s large aircraft carrier, that it was under attack

Two F-4s left the carrier to come to the Liberty’s aid. Apparently, the jets were armed only with nuclear weapons. When word reached the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara became irate and ordered the jets to return. “Tell the Sixth Fleet to get those aircraft back immediately,” he barked. McNamara’s injunction was reiterated in saltier terms by Admiral David L. McDonald, the chief of Naval Operations: “You get those fucking airplanes back on deck, and you get them back down.” The planes turned around. And the attack on the Liberty continued.

After the Israeli fighter jets had emptied their arsenal of rockets, three Israeli attack boats approached the Liberty. Two torpedoes were launched at the crippled ship, one tore a 40-foot wide hole in the hull, flooding the lower compartments, and killing more than a dozen American sailors.

As the Liberty listed in the choppy seas, its deck aflame, crew members dropped life rafts into the water and prepared to scuttle the ship. Given the number of wounded, this was going to be a dangerous operation. But it soon proved impossible, as the Israeli attack boats strafed the rafts with machine gun fire. No body was going to get out alive that way.

After more than two hours of unremitting assault, the Israelis finally halted their attack. One of the torpedo boats approached the Liberty. An officer asked in English over a bullhorn: “Do you need any help?”

The wounded commander of the Liberty, Lt. William McGonagle, instructed the quartermaster to respond emphatically: “Fuck you.”

The Israeli boat turned and left.

A Soviet destroyer responded before the US Navy, even though a US submarine, on a covert mission, was apparently in the area and had monitored the attack. The Soviet ship reached the Liberty six hours before the USS Davis. The captain of the Soviet ship offered his aid, but the Liberty’s commanding officer refused.

Finally, 16 hours after the attack two US destroyers reached the Liberty. By that time, 34 US sailors were dead and 174 injured, many seriously. As the wounded were being evacuated, an officer with the Office of Naval Intelligence instructed the men not to talk to the press about their ordeal.

Oh, you mean like the Lebanese in 2006 and the people of Gaza in 2008? And your version of ‘48 is hilarious. You act as if the Palestinians appeared out of nowhere and invaded Israel instead of the Jewish settlers appearing out of nowhere and invading Palestine. Which is, of course, what actually happened. And the ‘country’ you’re talking about is the land that was taken in the ‘67 war, which is to this day, disputed land. You should go and peddle your version of the truth somewhere else. The people on here are too well read to believe your propaganda. What caused the exodus of the pal’s was Israeli mayhem and murder which has continued to this day, and Israel has never paid a price for any of it and cannot even be condemned in the United Nations, because the United States consistently uses its veto to protect Israel from any accountability whatsoever. But in the court of public opinion in most nations in the world Israel has been found guilty of its crimes over and over again, however consistently it plays the role of the victim.

“My information was obtained through alternate venues.  But, in any

Right, “alternate venues,” which support the israeli bias, rather than
facts. I trust them also, to continue the current lies and distortion.
Israel attacked the USS Liberty, knowing it would not be punished,
similarly the “Gaza Freedom Flotilla” on May 31, 2010.

In no event do I have to ask myself a question that you pose, nor a
similar one posed by Billy Pilgrim, the C.I.A.-type-alias person.
Your Israeli presumptuousness simply reflects your underlying dictator
inclinations, which you act out on Palestinians. As far as what you
“believe deep down,” obviously, Israeli propaganda dominates.

A meaningful summary to your religious ancestry occurred about two
thousand years ago.
The God your prophets postulated for several thousand years broke the
covenant with your “tribe” due to its lies and deceit, and initiated
another plan.  A plan which your leadership continues to try to
distort, because their God did not do it the way they had demanded it
be done. Which, is the hallmark of israeli leadership. Israeli behavior
displays “We will do as we please, because we can get away with it,

It did not work with the God your prophets postulated.
Nor, does it work with humans who look inside the cover.

Back @ Robert…

Well you are correct in that the intent was to sink
the USS Liberty so that it would be a clean
operation.  It so happens that one of the attacking
torpedo boat had a malfunction and could not deliver
the final torpedo that would have sunk the vessel.
There was no reason for the US government to cover
up the incident other than to hide the true purpose
of NSA operation on-board the ship.  With the
Israeli victory in 1967, the attack on the USS
Liberty would have been considered collateral damage
with restitution made.  At that time should the true
nature of the Liberty operation have been made
known——there would have been serious political
repercussions in the USA.

American Media Misses the Boat

USA Today and the USS Liberty

“Capitol Hill, October 2003. It is a historic occasion. An independent, blue-ribbon commission is to release its findings from an investigation into an internationally significant 36-year-old attack on a US Navy ship that left more than 200 American sailors killed or wounded.

The commission consists of:

* A former ambassador to one of the US’s most important allies

* A US Navy rear admiral and former head of the Navy’s legal division

* A Marine general, America’s highest ranking recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor and the former Assistant Commandant of Marines

* A US Navy four-star admiral, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (the highest military position in the country), former Chief of Naval Operations, a World War II hero, and the only Naval admiral to have commanded both the Pacific and the Atlantic fleets

The panel is moderated by a former ambassador who served as Chief of Mission in Iraq and Deputy Director of Ronald Reagan’s White House Task Force on Terrorism.

The commission announces explosive findings:

* That the attack, by a US ally, was a “deliberate attempt to destroy an American ship and kill her entire crew”

* That the ally committed “acts of murder against American servicemen and an act of war against the United States”

* That the attack involved the machine-gunning of stretcher-bearers and life rafts

* That “the White House deliberately prevented the U.S. Navy from coming to the defense of the [ship] never before in American naval history has a rescue mission been cancelled when an American ship was under attack”

* That surviving crewmembers were later threatened with “court-martial, imprisonment or worse” if they talked to anyone about what had happened to them; and were “abandoned by their own government”

* That due to the influence of the ally’s “powerful supporters in the United States, the White House deliberately covered up the facts of this attack from the American people”

* That due to continuing pressure by this lobby, this attack remains “the only serious naval incident that has never been thoroughly investigated by Congress”

* That “there has been an official cover-up without precedent in American naval history”

* That “the truth about Israel’s attack and subsequent White House cover-up continues to be officially concealed from the American people to the present day and is a national disgrace”

* That “a danger to the national security exists whenever our elected officials are willing to subordinate American interests to those of any foreign nation” and that this policy “endangers the safety of Americans and the security of the United States”

Not when Israel is the attacking nation. Not when Israel is the “ally” to whose interests American needs are said to be subverted.

This extraordinarily high-ranking commission was reporting on the 1967 Israeli attack on the USS Liberty. Many analysts believe that the Liberty attack could be Israel’s undoing—at least as far as US support is concerned—if Americans knew the facts about it.

But they don’t. Here’s why:”

Israel’s wishes/goals did NOT materialize….because American witnesses survived the 2 hours attack/onslaught & the ship did not sink.

A large American flag on the USS Liberty deck…the act of war happened during daylight.

@ Robert…

Well made video, but it’s obvious that almost all of
the interviewees were quite unaware of the NSA
surveillance activities being conducted on-board the
Liberty and those that did know were persuaded to
keep quiet.  The fact is that Israel had a very
short time frame to execute military operations and
consolidate their victories in the 1967 War.  By NSA
providing information to Egypt on IDF activities
could having seriously impacted the ultimate
outcome.  Again I repeat Israel would have no reason
to attack the USS Liberty other than it was spying
for the enemy in time of war——that’s a no no!

Dead in the Water

During the Six-Day War, Israel attacked and nearly sank the USS Liberty belonging to its closest ally, the USA. Thirty-four American servicemen were killed in the two-hour assault by Israeli warplanes and torpedo boats.

BBC Four Investigative Report: Broadcast Saturday 17 May 2003

Video Runtime 69 Minutes

Israel claimed that the whole affair had been a tragic accident based on mistaken identification of the ship. The American government accepted the explanation.

For more than 30 years many people have disbelieved the official explanation but have been unable to rebut it convincingly. Now, Dead in the Water uses startling new evidence to reveal the truth behind the seemingly inexplicable attack. The film combines dramatic reconstruction of the events, with new access to former officers in the US and Israeli armed forces and intelligence services who have decided to give their own version of events.

Interviews include President Lyndon Johnson’s Secretary of Defence Robert McNamara, former head of the Israeli navy Admiral Shlomo Errell and members of the USS Liberty crew.”

You are correct; according to legend, the Jews
descended from Isaac and the Arabs from Ishmael.
Arabs and Jews are descended from brothers of
another mother which makes them half-cousins.  And
your remark about Gov. Romney is pretty funny though
I doubt Mormons have anything to do with any Hebrew
tribe in spite of the writings of Joseph Smith who
for an illiterate person was one heck of a huckster
only to be done in by another con-man, Brigham
Young.  But the Mormon Temple is magnificent——keep
that money rolling in!  Reminds me of the famous
line by L. Ron. Hubbard——“If you want to get rich,

The USS Liberty Timeline

Americans for Middle East Understanding

June 8, 1967, Israeli forces attack the USS Liberty. They kill 34 American servicemen, wounding 171 others. It will be the highest casualty rate ever inflicted on a U.S. naval vessel, with 7 out of every 10 crew members killed or injured. It will also be the only peacetime attack on a U.S. naval vessel that, to this day, the Congress of the United States of America formally refuses to investigate.

The facts, as known, are as follow:

24 May 1967. U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) orders USS Liberty, an intelligence-gathering vessel, to depart Abidjan for eastern Mediterranean, via Rota, Spain.

1 June 1967. Commanded by Capt. William McGonagle, Liberty arrives at Rota to load technical support material and supplies.

2 June 1967. Liberty departs Rota at top speed of 18 knots en route to a point 13 miles off the Gaza Strip, well within international waters.

5 June 1967, 7:45 (all times cited are local Liberty time). Israel attacks Egypt, simultaneously putting out false reports that Egypt had attacked first. Captain McGonagle asks Vice Admiral William Martin at Sixth Fleet headquarters to send a destroyer as an armed escort and auxiliary communication center, noting that Liberty’s “self defense capability limited to four .50 caliber machine guns and small arms.”

Back @ drbhelthi…

I wouldn’t rely on any documents obtained via FOIA
to shed light on something that was classified “top
secret” as the Liberty incident was.  My information
was obtained through alternate venues.  But, in any
event, you have to ask yourself a simple question,
why would Israel attack an American vessel?  The
Israeli pilot identified it as American, but they
knew nothing of its purpose and followed orders.
The Israeli High Command knew and had no choice——
for the only reason to attack the Liberty was
because it was engaged in nefarious activities
detrimental to the IDF.  But I believe deep down you
know that.

Thank you, Billy.

“When these fascist regimes stop killing their own citizens and renounce
war against Israel, then maybe there will be a peaceful solution to the
creation of a viable Palestinian state.”

That seems like a rather broad statement to me.  We are talking about
humankind, with a double handful of families manipulating the world
economy, instigating hate and wars for their own profiteering.

Since the USGOV has become the largest murderer of people in their own
homelands, outside the U.S. and has circumnavigated the U.S.Constitution
by “executive directive,” I do not have much hope of any improvement.

I am not aware that any nation has declared war on Israel.  I am well
aware of the Joseph vs Esau “war” which seems to have continued a few
thousand years into our current time, and, which may be reflected in
your above “If-If” postulate.  Which clan did Joseph represent - ?

Regards, doc b.

result of ww2. I also know that without the efforts of
the red army, I would not be here. You failed to answer
my question. Israel is not the only country guilty of
colonialism.  The Arab states plus Iran would love to
see Israel wiped off the map. When these fascist
regimes stop killing their own citizens and renounce
war against Israel, then maybe there will be a peaceful
solution to the creation of a viable Palestinian state.

I am unable to verify your statement that the U.S.Gov. was supplying
information to the Egyptian government, which you state triggered the
Israeli attack on the USS Liberty.  Hundreds of documents later released
via F.O.I.A., and on congressional demand, do not substantiate your

The destruction of the life rafts was a violation of international law,
and was also deliberate.  Similarly, the Israeli lie that they did not
know the identity of the USS Liberty.  Recordings by AWACS verified that
pilots reported that the ship was an American vessel, yet were
instructed to disregard and attack.  ATTACK !

The record of compensation by Israel to the families of the dead and
injured is a mockery, similar to the attack on the USS Liberty.  Similar
to the attack on the “Gaza Freedom Flotilla” on May 31, 2010.  Similar
to the destruction and acquisition of Palestinian property and the
murder of Palestinians.

Being a veteran, with first service to the USGOV in 1956, having entered
retirement late 1997, I am somewhat acquainted with armistice lines and
boundaries – and a few other areas.

NO, Maani´s reply was very civil, but was was NOT absolutely correct.
Your response is certainly not verifiable with historical information.

@ drbhelthi…

Maani is absolutely correct; crossing an armistice
line is crossing into a no-man’s land as per
international law——that’s why there is no big
outcry.  As for the USS Liberty you have to go back
and review the entire situation.  The USS Liberty
was on a spying mission providing surveillance on
Egyptian and Israeli troops movements as well as the
conduct of the 1979 war and in that context was not
a problem to either party.  However, the USA, in an
attempt to maintain a “balance of power” began to
supply the Egyptian command with information on
Israeli troop positions and movement when they saw
the IDF was in a superior position.  When the
Israeli authorities learned of this they were well
in their right to attack the Liberty as an active
spy vessel providing information to the enemy during
time of war.  The US command was well aware of this
and thus it was swept under the rug.  The Israelis
did provide compensation to the families of those
injured or killed just like the USA does today in
Iraq and Afghanistan when civilians are killed in a
military action.  However, in Iraq and Afghanistan,
because life is cheap, the compensation is a few
thousand dollars——the Israelis paid millions for
the Liberty attack though you might say they just
took it out of the foreign aid they got.

“The knee-jerk anti-Israel comments here are not looking at the facts on
the ground - ” @ Manni

The facts on the ground are not being reported.
Being reported is rather biased info in support of israeli forces.
And, on whose border?
How and when was this “border” established?

Similar to the attack on the “Gaza Freedom Flotilla” on May 31, 2010,
in international waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Similar to the attack on the USS Liberty,  June 8, 1967, in which former
President Lyndon Johnson and his defense secretary, Robert McNamara,
committed what amounted to treason.

I am also interested in the Allied Soldiers who died while ending WWII,
and who freed from the various “extermination Kasernen” all the

Of course, the Zionist-types disregard the Allied Forces and sacrifices
of Allied Soldiers, while having constantly reminded the world of the 6

In a quite different way, I am also interested in the continuation of

is the acceleration of delimitations of American freedoms by the entity

Excuse me…

While I fully support Palestinian rights, including a separate sovereign state, what is occurring here is not “protest.”  The Palestinians in Syria are engaging in deliberate provocation of the Israeli border guards - and are getting exactly the reaction they deserve.  If one engages in non-violent civil disobedience, one can expect to be arrested.  If one engages in deliberate provocation of armed border gaurds, one can expect to be tear-gassed (which the Israelis did first, in an attempt to AVOID shooting anyone) and probably shot at.

The knee-jerk anti-Israel comments here are not looking at the facts on the ground.

Peace.  (in our time…)

We must continue to support our great leader, Nwhatayahoo,

figure continues to serve its purpose very well.”

Those are NOT Israel’s borders. They are occupied lands and are armistice borders, Israel deliberately refuses to delinianate their borders, enabling them to expand them as the years go by. Quite the cancer in the Middle East.
