A group of heavily armed militants in military uniforms stormed a Yemeni intelligence headquarters Saturday, killing 11 and reportedly freeing several prisoners. The gunmen were suspected to be local al-Qaida members. The attack fanned U.S. concerns over the Yemeni government’s ability to combat a growing al-Qaida threat. —JCL

Associated Press:

Heavily armed militants wearing military uniforms on Saturday stormed the Yemeni intelligence service’s southern headquarters, killing at least 11 people, security officials said.

An eyewitness outside the facility in the southern port city of Aden, about 200 miles (320 kilometers) south of the capital, San’a, said the gunmen, suspected to be from the local branch of al-Qaida, freed several prisoners.

Officials declined to comment on whether any detainees had been freed.

The brazen prison break highlights the challenges Yemen’s U.S.-backed government faces in battling increasingly bold al-Qaida elements that have found refuge in this impoverished country at the tip of the Arabian Peninsula.

What proof is there that some people wearing military uniforms
are al qaida? Because they broke some people out of jail? If
yemen is an al qaida stronghold, should there be no end to
suicide bombers, IEDs going off, continuous insurgency activity?

This more and more is just like the w & dick run up to the
invasion of iraq under false pretenses. And now, w just looks
like he got a dark tan.

To tell the truth is does more to show how much this ‘ghost war
on terror’ is just a sham to keep the micc happy with their
continual war. I begin to really not like george orwell and his
writing ‘1984’ because it just gave the plans to what is going on
with our ‘big brother’ government.

hello. this is only one current example of the greed infected globalist corporate murderous criminal scum working at GoldenSacks, and ruining our government; and i mean that in a good way. they got bags of cash from BP, so they are ill-advised; but ‘moving on’ to try and secure natural gas contracts in Yemen, by fabricating an Al-Qooka element, and securing for the US a military base in Yemen: to protect their interests. if only that darned underwear ‘terrorist’ stunt would have worked! the money from BeyondPetroleum goes right into government pockets, minus their cut at GoldenSacks. military porkulus for cash hungry states- just in time for erections 2010. do it. let’s invade Yemen.

This is not the first time that such a brazen attack against Yemeni forces is being carried out by what appears to be, elements of Alquida.Since the failed attempt of the Nigerian terrorist, many attackes were carried out by joint American-Yemeni forces against Alquda, but to no avail. On the cotrary, lack of intelligence coordination, coupled with Yemeni incompetence, turned to be counter productive for both governments. The killing of innocent civilians in the Maghala, Abien incident, has garnered public sympathy for Alquda and an outrage against the Yemeni government.Saleh’s reign for over 30 years, has by all standards, failed to achieve the minimum goals inspired by the Yemeni people.Rampant corruption coupled with deadly cetralization of all powers in Saleh’s family, has culminated in the automatic secession of many parts of the country which either ruled by Shieks or reblles. The Southern scessionist movement is the most threatening phenomenon that should be addressed by the Yemeni government. For almost 20 years,Saleh’s regime had treated the South as a prize and the people with deep contempt. Most of the land was generiously distributed among his relatives as lots, some of those lots have reached thousands of square km,while most inhabitants can’t find a place to roof their families. Now, with the election due next year, hope is focusing on the opposition parties to garner support to secure enough seats that will pave the way for Saleh’s departure. Its as one official close to Saleh said,;without his removal the country and is facing a dark prospect”.
