Why a Confirmation Fight Would Have Been Good for Warren, Obama and the U.S.

Fearing a tough confirmation fight, the president declined to nominate Elizabeth Warren to head the consumer protection agency she invented. That’s a shame, writes The Boston Globe’s Steven Syre, who argues that the next choice won’t get confirmed either, and at least a nominated Warren “could have done more than anyone to help defend the agency from persistent attacks on its authority and funding.”

Steven Syre in the Boston Globe:

As the nominee, Warren would have been in a position to continue to defend the agency she invented in the earliest months of its existence. She could speak to consumer issues and people would listen. How many people will pay attention when she is writing and speaking from Cambridge at the start of the fall semester?

[...] Remaining in the Washington spotlight, Warren could have done more than anyone to help defend the agency from persistent attacks on its authority and funding. Critics would still like to eliminate the director’s job entirely, handing bureau authority instead to a commission that would presumably do much less, if anything.

The president would have helped himself by nominating Warren, too. Standing up for consumers by nominating an able watchdog chief opposed by a wall of bankers is a good political alternative to what the president actually did - choosing someone else in an apparent concession.

If liberals were the proactive “progressive” thinkers they pretend to be they wouldn’t be focused upon greater consumer advocacy.

Liberals turned people into consumers, and now the consumers are consuming the human habitable planet.

What’s needed is a People’s Protection Agency, to protect the natural persons from the liberal/conservative partnership’s support of the corporate person policies of extraction and exploitation into extinction.

just concurring with the rest of you on Nader’s
comments…the old boys club at the Federal Reserve has
yet to be penetrated!

Warren is a classy, super smart lady, and I hope she
succeeds way beyond what we imagine for her.

Can’t do it no more.

Mr. O is pretty remarkable, and I wonder if something isn’t going to break loose if he keeps up his act.  There must be some limit.

IMO, Obama was quite displeased with having his hand forced away from supporting the Banksters and into giving favor to Warren.  But he has played it like a pro for his clients.  The public’s eye is off this ball now, with Warren off the table in as gentle a way as possible, with another supposed consumer advocate replacing her.  Next, comes a rejection of this new candidate, who does not have the popularity of Warren, and will not elicit the same outcry.  Yep, Obama is smart as a fox.  He is a brilliant manager of “the public”, even if his agenda is transparent to clear minded observers.

Just when I thought I couldn’t be more disappointed in Obama he surprises me again.  I think Nader is right, progressives like me will not be voting for Obama again.

Nader Blasts Obama for Bypassing Warren for Consumer Position

Via Institute for Public Accuracy

Nader called Warren the most “qualified, most motivated and most articulate
candidate for the directorship of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. ...
President Obama should realize that his regular back-of-the-hand attitude to
his liberal and progressive supporters—who sent him to the White House—
can have consequences. He believes they have nowhere to go. But they do. They
can stay home in 2012, as so many did in 2010 to the detriment of the
Democrats and many Congressional races.”

Nader wrote a letter backing Warren a year ago:

Nice Steven,

Well, there has been a well documented patterns of using the energy of intelligent and well intending people to suck in all our burning hopes, just to have the candle for ignition be blown out,, with a shocking back-draft, by replacing those people with a Washington insider dud, or commission of duds. This pattern has nothing to do with political concessions or lofty bi-partisan maneuvering, it has everything to do with a pro active modus operandi, none of us has yet to fully admit or accept.

Yes, “right before our eyes”,,”can this be”,, sort of thing,,, just “shock and awe-ful”.

I think I am going to need to go stay at one of my favorite zen centers or monasteries for a bit, to untangle myself from the “Obama Crisis”,, until this Obama thing has run its’ course.

I think I am going to be sick…

There is this zen story;

Two Buddhist monks were arguing;

One argued;  “it is the flag that is moving”

The other monk argued; “it is the wind that is moving”

The two monks were sure about their position, and this went on for hours, each covering every possible means of convincing the other of his position.

Finally, a Zen Master came strolling by, and the two monks immediately ran up to the Zen Master and asked; “Master, Master, please help us, is it the flag or the wind that is moving?”

The Zen master replied; “it is neither the wind nor the flag that is moving, it is your minds that are moving”.

Got this odd sense that we are running up to Obama and asking him to solve a problem, and he is telling us it is all in our minds, and we are way off, we need to wake up to his reality or get out,,, sort of thing. That somehow, he is the only person “present”.

I am sure it is not just me, but somehow his answer does not quell our emotional tornado of wasted energy, direct our effort toward true material concerns of the moment,  nor diminish our obsessive attachment to his leadership.

There are zen traps, designed only to unburden a person’s mind from attachment, bring relief to a injure or suffering a person in some manner,, but then there is this phenomenon of the “Obama trap”, which is designed, it seems,,, to continue suffering, waste energy and keep us all from what must be done now.

I have met so called zen masters like this,,what you do is dump them, otherwise you get caught in very sticky and almost fatal mental fly paper. Though, sometimes the students wake the master up, much harder, since somehow the status and prestige has been already acquired, and can almost be an insurmountable barrier for change.

I wonder though….

Thank you,

The republicans are still calling the shots…..Obama doesn’t want to piss them off, so he
might as well never have been elected for all the good it’s done us….

Another right turn into into political cowardice, he talks the talk but he’s too weak to walk
the walk…...

Obama is a gutless wonder….

Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda.

Now this disappointing step by Obama is already Yesterday’s News.

Always underestimate Obama’s willingness to stand up for principles.  That way you can’t be disappointed as he keeps lowering the bar.

“Obama” and “fight” should not be in the same sentence
together, unless he is running away from one.  Now
Kucinich, he’s a fighter.  Warren, she’s a fighter.
Obama, why, he’s just a damed sissy.

Betrayals are not soon forgot.

Just wake up and smell the thorns, unless we have a 1789-style revolution the system will continue to be the playground of the oligarchy. Obama is Wall Street’s bitch, get over it and get awake.
