White House Pledges $400 Million to Palestinians

White House / Pete Souza

President Obama greets Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

A White House statement calls the $400 million aid package announced Wednesday “a down payment on the United States’ commitment to Palestinians in Gaza, who deserve a better life and expanded opportunities, and the chance to take part in building a viable, independent state of Palestine, together with those who live in the West Bank.”

The commitment includes money for new schools, infrastructure and repairs throughout the Palestinian territories, but, as the Guardian points out, there’s no mention of how the U.S. plans to get banned construction materials past Israel and Egypt’s blockade of Gaza.  —PZS

The Guardian:

The money will go towards infrastructure projects in both Gaza and the West Bank, including $10m for the construction of new UN schools. It did not explain how the schools will be built while Israel maintains its embargo on construction materials entering Gaza, claiming they could be diverted to make weapons and build underground bunkers.

Earlier this week the UK government promised an extra £19m in aid. Israel today announced extra items it would allow into Gaza, including crisps, canned fruit, packaged hummus and shaving foam.

Fat Freddy:

Actually, U.S. aid to Israel comes in at closer to $10 billion.  Thus, $400 million to the Palestinians is 1/25 of Israel’s booty.  Not exactly parity, huh?

Peace.

This is just another Hollywood movie Washington style. Just like in the movies the $ will be used to ‘build things’ and just like in the movies the Israelis will come along and drop bombs on them and the people inside. Then Obama will say ‘both sides should restrain themselves’ and ‘Israel has a right to defend itself’. I’ve seen it all before.

Great! Another nice mess you got us into Ollie!

I love to see my tax money going to other countries, when our schools are closing and or highways are crumbling, of course we are spreading Democracy around to unenlightened places like Iraq and Afghanistan.

Spreading Democracy is starting to remind me of the Spanish spreading smallpox to the new world, someone had to do it!

What wars?

Sinbad:

Let me give your questions a try.

1. No.

2. Probably.

3. No. I’m fairly confident that even Abbas will avoid any hint of using the money to buy weapons. And the US, incompetent as they are, will be keeping a close eye on the money. Call me naive, but…

I have few disturbing questions, which for sure will never be answered:

1. Is this the blood-money on behalf of Israel for the thousands of Palestinians massacred by terrorist Israel over the years?!

2. Isn’t this money going to be delivered to the sell-out Mahmoud Abbas, who will further use it as a hush-payments to those Palestinians within his gang who might be showing signs of disenchantment for the lot of their brethren in Gaza?!

3. Isn’t part or all of this money is intended for further weapons to the Abbas group so they can wage a war of further extermination of their brethren in Gaza, who though winning a clear elections three years ago, were isolated, labeled “terrorists” and have been besieged and starved for three long years?!

There are other possibilities for what these funds could be used, including, but not limited to creating a wedge between the Palestinians in Gaza and those in the West Bank, as a further plot to weaken the Palestinians and allow Israel to continue creating non-reversible colonial facts on the ground!

What the Palestinians need is peace, justice and dignity; not dirty money to make things worse!

$400 million to Palestinians, huh? Conservative, defensible estimates place direct US aid to Israel at about $3 billion. This should really help level the playing field, don’t ya think?

Hmmm, will the $400 million be deducted from the $3 billion? Nah, if we did that, we might lose our discount on all of those transplant organs we get from Israel. (Where exactly do they come from?)

As Al Jazeera reports:

In recent years, US aid to the Palestinians has been sent mostly to the West Bank, governed by Abbas’ Fatah movement, or funnelled to Gaza through international agencies.

Washington pledged $900m for the Palestinians at a donors conference in 2009.

Al Jazeera’s Patty Culhane, reporting from Washington, said she had been chasing officials to find out how much of that money had actually been paid out.

“The state department said yesterday that in the last year, for Gaza and the West Bank, the US committed to spending $200m,” she said.

“I was pushing at the White House trying to figure out where the difference is, where did the money go, and they’re basically trying to brush off the question.”

Now put it on a U.S. flagged ship and sail it to Gaza.

If Israel interferes, nuke em before they can nuke us.

Hey, we’re only in debt $13 trillion.  What’s another $400 million to give away to terrorists?

Why not spend the money on job creation here at home. Until we get our own country fixed, we shouldn’t worry as much about others. Obama seems to think we can just print all the money we need.

If Obama really wants to help the Palestinians, why don’t we invade Israel to stop them from killing the Palestinians. It’s worked so well for us before.
