White House Mum on Palin’s Latest WordsPosted on Jan 13, 2011
If the president, or anyone in Obama’s close advisory circles, has an opinion about Sarah Palin’s latest rhetorical creation—her already infamous “blood libel” zinger—the world will have to do without that information for the time being. During an exchange with the press Thursday, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs owned that he had watched Palin make her statement but purposefully left Obama out of that discussion. —KA

That is exactly the right answer from Gibbs. Just because the media have a bizarre obsession with an insignificant, non-politician, wank job from Alaska, doesn’t mean that Obama should as well.

Rico:
“I want you to give me your honest assessment. Same shooter, Karl Rove the victim…IMHO, 90% of the reaction from the left was cynical opportunism, to get their digs in at the TP and gun nuts generally. My point is that if gun crime caused by violent rhetoric from the right is the REAL culprit, then the identity of the victim should be irrelevant, and the left would be just as exercised by the shooting of Rove as it is of Giffords. No?”
First, there is a difference between “caused by” and “enabled by.” And no, it is not semantic. No one is suggesting that the rhetoric from the right “caused” the violence, only that it enabled it.
But I’ll go you one better. Same shooter, GWB the victim. Even with all the demonizing and hatred spewed by the left against him, I would bet that the reaction of the left would have been very similar, if not exactly the same; i.e., although the violent rhetoric part of it might be less played up, the calls for greater gun controls would not. Of course, this is all speculative, and you can simply take the opposite position.
That said, I disagree that the left’s response re the rhetoric issue was “cynical opportunism.” It was well-founded, and that has been shown over and over in the media, in the blogosphere, and on these boards.
Peace.

I think they’re playing it very smart indeed. No sense calling down a shit storm of the “Rhetoric Wars, Part II” from the rabid right loudmouths.
I just wish Loughner’s victims had been a Republican congresswoman, a judge appointed by Clinton, and bystanders at a Baptist church social so we wouldn’t have to deal with all this righteous indignation and gun-ban talk from the left.
I can’t imagine the left trashing the TP and their inflammatory “culture and language of violence” if the victims had been of their own. But then, that would assume a dollop of hypocrisy on the part of the left, so I’m most likely wrong.

I want you to give me your honest assessment. Same shooter, Karl Rove the victim. Please don’t take this as a setup. IMHO, 90% of the reaction from the left was cynical opportunism, to get their digs in at the TP and gun nuts generally.
My point is that if gun crime caused by violent rhetoric from the right is the REAL culprit, then the identity of the victim should be irrelevant, and the left would be just as exercised by the shooting of Rove as it is of Giffords. No? (And please don’t evade by saying that Loughner would NEVER shoot Rove. We know too much about Loughner’s insanity and lack of interest in the TP or politics generally to call this a political crime. It was a stalker’s crime, a la Chapman and Hinckley.)

If Sarah Palin has fallen into the shit pit, let her flail around in it all by herself, or with her TP buds.
This is one time the WH silence is eloquent!
