Washington State Poised to Pass Gay-Marriage BillPosted on Jan 23, 2012
She’s thought it over, and now Washington state Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen has made up her mind in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage, which should give the gay-marriage measure currently under consideration in the Evergreen State enough legislative oomph to push it over the line and become law. I’m so excited about this! I live in Seattle, and we’ve been waiting for this day for weeks—nay, months! While the state currently has an “everything but marriage” law, meaning that gays technically have all of the legal benefits as married couples, this is still a “separate but equal” law. Refusal to formally attach the word “marriage” to gay unions symbolizes an endorsement of social discrimination, which means that there is still discrimination being supported, and politicians have no business doing this. So, adding the word “marriage” to gay unions will send the message that the government does not endorse social discrimination.
