US and Venezuela fight over chicken

Tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela took a bizarre turn this week after Venezuelan authorities confiscated diplomatic cargo headed for the American Embassy in Caracas and accused Washington of smuggling.  Included in the shipment were parts for ejector seats and 176 pounds of chicken.

The State Department has denied the charge and demanded an explanation: “The impounded cargo consisted of household effects of a U.S. diplomat and a shipment of commissary goods.... We have requested an immediate explanation of the entire incident.”

BBC News:

Displaying a photo of the lorries for journalists, Mr Chacon said that only four out of 20 packages were considered diplomatic baggage covered by international protocol.

The US had bypassed customs and the necessary paperwork with the other 16 which included 80 kilos (176 pounds) of chicken, he said.

“They brought in food goods without any health controls, they brought in armaments without any legal control,” he told reporters.

“It’s not the Venezuelan government that is making violations - it’s the US embassy that’s making them.”

In my first post here I said that Venezuela had not proved that it was the USA that initiated the coup. I have seen that there is a new book out that does “prove” that the USA was a co conspirator in the coup. (I don’t know the name of the book, does anyone?)

Further I have read that their have been “Plan Columbia” troops and personnel crossing in from Colombia so there might very well be an American attempt to overthrow the government in the near future.  The American overthrow of the government in Haiti used the Dominican Republic as its base of operations.

Good illustration Peter, but is the chicken on the proper flag?
Perchanse is there a floating ploy to fling hens @ Hugo?
The whole incident is as silly as the rooster posturing by both U.S. and Venezuela.
Chavez’s profound and sincere offers to help heat poor urban areas in the U.S. appear overshadowed by this
pettiness.
Lovely will be the day when the David & Goliath nonsense is replaced/returned to the policy of the chicken little that could.

I wonder how long it will be before those ejector seats, fuses and detonators will be Venezuala’s WMD’s and George Bush will order the country bombed, invaded and occupied.  They do have oil, don’t they?

BBC report says “"The impounded cargo consisted of household effects of a US diplomat and a shipment of commissary goods,” said US state department spokesman Edgar Vasquez.”

Why a diplomat wanted to ship 176 pounds of chicken? Was there a chicken shortage in Venezuala at that time?

I can’t figure it out.

If only you read Spanish local papers! A diplomatic valise in fact was a container loaded with: war planes spare parts, detonators...fuses and other suspicious goodies that were not spell out, prior to departure or clear with the Venezuelian embassy in Washigton.

In the other hand try to bring any food to the USA and you will be in the list of bio-terrorists.

The us attitude and behavior toward Cenezuela is stupid and not in the best interests of the U.S.
Venezuela has tons of oil. They are happy to sell it to us. Why don’t we make nice to them rather than trying to overthrough Chavez?

it’s hilarious that taxpayers are stuck with the bill for sending chickens to america’s diplomats living in venezuela, which is hardly suffering shortages of foodstuffs

one can only infer that our chickenshit leaders are fussy about such things

It seems to me that Venezuala is trying to pick a fight as these are not serious issues unless we are not being told the full story.

Now I know Venezuala accused the USA of instigating the coup (rather than just supporting it) but they have not presented that evidence for some reason or another. I know most government people believe that the USA engineered the coup but they should bring out the evidence rather than doing harrassing tactics.
