U.S. Troops Begin Departure From Iraq

U.S. Air Force / Senior Airman Bradley A. Lail

Soldiers attend a ceremony in 2007 to honor fallen service members at Kirkuk Regional Air Base in Iraq.

The withdrawal of American troops from Iraq is on track, said Pentagon officials Wednesday, though the Obama administration has yet to decide just how many troops will stay beyond the Dec. 31 departure deadline.

The official departure of American troops from Iraq began earlier in the week, when a 700-member unit returned to the States. The remaining 46,000 troops left in Iraq are expected to follow in the coming months. The Obama administration, however, is said to be considering a number of options that would leave several thousand troops behind for training and “possibly other missions,” The Associated Press reported. —BF

The AP:

If the Iraqis decide they do not need a reinforced U.S. training contingent, then only about 150 U.S. military members would remain in Iraq next year as part of the U.S. Embassy’s Office of Security Cooperation. They would help train Iraqis on new military equipment like battle tanks.

James F. Jeffrey, the U.S. ambassador in Iraq, said Wednesday that a proposal to keep 3,000 troops in Iraq next year, as reported by some news organizations, has “no official status or credibility.” Jeffrey said that proposal has not been a part of ongoing discussions in Baghdad where both governments have been weighing whether up to 10,000 US forces should stay beyond Dec. 31.

I just think it’s the first thing that needs to be said before any serious conversation
takes place.  Obama may “chose” to draw down troops or not to, but it is the
goons, thugs, rapists, and murderers pictured above who sign up to spread their
death and destruction in lands they know nothing about.  Without Obama, the war
continues.  Without the retards in uniforms, no war.

To Robespierre115:

The Pres said he would move them out - some have started to trickle out - give the man a chance to continue the process.

I am as impatient as ANYbody - and, frankly, THE reason I voted for O was that he offered the best chance of getting the troops out.
Or do you really suggest that Bomb-bomb-bomb-Iran McCain and Reload Palin would have moved them any faster???  You cannot be serious that even Hillary would have pulled out any faster.  Note that there has been exactly ONE month without casualties there so far.  That stat should speed things up a bit.  But the Pentagon pushes hard to keeps its investment going.

To thethirdman:
Is that an individual offer or some kind of perverted group orgy you want?  Thanks so much for moving the discussion forward so eloquently….. NOT!

As much as libtards want to deny it, Obama will continue the occupation of Iraq. 10,000, 3,000, it doesn’t matter, we’re going to leave new targets for Muqtada al-Sadr’s guerrillas.

To bad they are busily replacing the troops being withdrawn with new poorly educated kids who can’t find a decent job - ANYWHERE!

100 Nat’l Guard from Hilo Hawaii shipped out over the weekend - six weeks in Texas and then on to Bagdad.

Most are family men, who have been there before. When asked about the 12/31 pull-out date, the commander said that there aren’t any firm numbers, and they should expect a years deployment - minimum.

Truth Dig would do better if it did some real reporting rather than just reprinting lies from the MSM!
