Monthly U.S. Troop Deaths in Iraq Hit a Two-Year High

Soldiers carry a casket in Arlington National Cemetery.

Despite the reduced number of U.S. troops in Iraq, the monthly death toll among Americans there has risen to a two-year high, reached when three soldiers were killed Wednesday in a rocket attack.

The latest deaths bring June’s U.S. fatalities to 15, a monthly total that hasn’t been seen since June 2009. Of those 15 deaths, 14 were combat-related, which is significant considering that the number of U.S. troops in Iraq is less than a third of what it was at the war’s peak. —BF

The Washington Post:

With American troop deaths in Iraq reaching a two-year high in June, U.S. military officials are fingering Iran for the violence, accusing an Iranian special forces unit of supporting the militia groups suspected of carrying out the attacks.

Three U.S. soldiers were killed Wednesday in a rocket attack at a U.S. base near the Iranian border, the military said, bringing the month’s death toll to 15 and marking the bloodiest month since 15 troops died here in June 2009, according to iCasualties.org, a Web site that tracks U.S. military deaths. Fourteen of the deaths were combat-related, the highest since 23 soldiers and Marines were killed in action in June 2008, the site said.

WhatAMess,

Have you been to Iraq recently? Are you an Iraqi or in communication with the whole of Iraqi society? As someone located there currently, I can promise you that your statement is incorrect.

No, thanks to the 24/7 event of worldwide media, one doesn’t actually have to travel to the gates of hell to know that it exists.

Unless you’re a contractor making an grossly obscene salary, I can’t agree with your statement, given the fact that every year of occupation since the invasion the Iraquis have overwhelmingly opposed the U.S. presence.

As someone who believes WhatAMess is incorrect, I must answer.  Patrick Henry said “As a whole” meaning - the majority.  All the information I’ve seen -polls of Iraqis, Newspaper reports of surveys, etc. agree with Patrick Henry.

WhatAMess you said many want the United States to stay:

Either define many or: Do you mean that the majority of Iraqis want the United States to stay in Iraq?  And if this is what you claim can you give me some non-propaganda, non-spin, to cite the basis for such a statement?  Assuming you haven’t run a National Poll, how would you know other than the same sources I see - and they don’t carry your message if you mean - the majority?

Supporters of the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq despise those they consider “surrender monkeys.” In their eyes, armed resistance to foreign invaders is the only ethical option.  Apparently, there are Iraqis who feel the exact same way.
Ironic, isn’t it?

Well, it looks as though we have finally achieved success. The Iraq democracy is becoming exactly like the US democracy, violent, a high percentage of it’s citizens in prison, and controlled by a corrupt cabal.

PatrickHenry,

Have you been to Iraq recently? Are you an Iraqi or in communication with the whole of Iraqi society? As someone located there currently, I can promise you that your statement is incorrect. Many want us out of their nation, certainly, but many also want us to stay, fearing that the absence of our presence will be far worse for their well-being.

Your second point, however, stands: the longer we are here, the more military personnel we will lose by attrition due to that segment that does want us gone.

The Iraqis as a whole don’t want us there and we will continue to lose personnel by attrition.

Now what was the goal again besides a personal vendetta by the last U.S. regime?

Bush/Cheney don’t belong in a Federal prison wasting
precious tax dollars. They do, however, belong at the
short end of a rope.

I will never stop insisting that both George W.Bush and Dick Cheney belong in a Federal Prison for the lies they manufactured that mired us in this horrid little war. I understand that this will never happen of course.

I also continue to wonder how long the American people are going to remain placid, passive and silent while their government is co-opted and used to increase profits instead of caring for its people.

It seems that more folks every day believe the lies and distortions we are fed daily. Education is in shambles, as is our infrastructure, Social Security is being subjected to a stealth attack and Barack Obama is leading that attack it seems. Our medical coverage is a bad joke and there are third world nations that offer better care than does our own.

The wealth of the select few increases, corporate profits are at an all time high yet no jobs are being created, benefits are rare as hens teeth as well in this new job market. Yet we the people are more like we the sheep.
