U.S. Army Lt. Col. Andy Ulrich walks with Iraqi officers after an operation last Wednesday by Iraqi forces, the day after the U.S. combat role officially ended.

American soldiers reportedly were called in to help Iraqi forces repel an attack by insurgents on an army base in Baghdad, just five days after the much-ballyhooed official end of U.S. combat operations in the country.

Seven people died in the attack and more than 20 were wounded as a group of suicide bombers invaded the compound. —JCL

BBC:

US forces have helped repel an attack on an army base in Baghdad in which seven people died, security officials have told the BBC.

If confirmed, it would mark the first such use of American troops since the official end of US combat operations five days ago.

Under a deal, US forces remaining in Iraq can only participate in operations at the request of Iraqi authorities.

The US military said it could not confirm or deny it had been involved.

What’s this?  Obama said it was all over.  He said so . . . on television.  Have I been duped?

At last count (August, 2010) there are 75,000 private
contractors in Iraq - many of them armed.  They’re
costing us ($1222/day vs $71/day for a military
counterpart) a fortune. Not only are we getting
financially and royally ripped off, we’re paying them
mega-bucks to, apparently, sit on their fat asses.

Also you forgot to thank all the members of Congress

the 535 or so minus Kucinach and Paul.  Bush couldn’t

have done it without them.

I think that endless help to the Iraqi military won’t
do much good. Soon it’s gonna turn into the same
trap, Soviets once got in Afghanistan
(http://www.win.ru/en/school/3226.phtml).

Easy to get in, hard to get out. I know, that refers
to the question whether we had to get in there in the
first place, but for now, military command is to
decide whether there’d be sense in further supporting
Iraqi people with more than just investments and
arms. Just as the author of the article mentioned,
the war is yet not win, yet not lost and yet not
over.

Iraq, the gift that keeps on giving. Thank you Shrub and Company particularly Mr.
Dick ” keep your powder dry ” Cheney. I wonder if Dick is duck hunting this year,
or is it quail? Keep your head down folks.

“Non-combat” combat? Golly, how Orwellian is that.
