The family of a Russian scientist convicted in 2004 of spying for the CIA says he and nine other prisoners were being prepared for an exchange brokered by U.S. and Russian authorities. The deal would reportedly see the return of the alleged Russian spies who were recently arrested on American soil.

Los Angeles Times:

The scientist’s mother, Svetlana Sutyagina, said in a telephone interview that after arriving at Moscow’s high-security Lefortovo prison Tuesday, her son was ushered into a room where he met with a general from the Russian security services and three U.S. diplomats.

“He was told that he and nine other prisoners will be exchanged for the 10 Russians recently arrested in the United States,” his mother said, adding that her son told her the list was prepared by U.S. officials. “If he agreed, Igor was told he would have to sign a document, which among other things contained a paragraph where Igor was to confess of spying, which he never did before.”

Tit-for-tat spy catching is nothing but an expensive game… at OUR EXPENSE.

“They” know that “We” know that “They” know… etc. I wonder how many BILLIONS of our tax dollars the “authorities” blow each year playing their game… oh, of course, in the name of National Security.

What a bloody joke.

Francis Gary Powers was shot down in Russia in the late 50’s outside Sverdlosk. He wrote a really great book about his experiences after he was exchanged for Col Rudolf Abel,a Russian spy who had been caught in the US. He would die in a helicoptor crash while piloting a news chopper for a local TV station in Atlanta.  I would be suspicious of all the information that has been presented about an exchange of prisoners. The Russians are generally very secretive and why would they give so much information to just one prisoner?
Does anyone remember the Russian who defected to the west in Italy about 20 years ago? He started giving us secrets and then decided to return home. The Russians had two members of their local embassy escort him. When they arrived, one of those two escorts was arrested as a US spy by the Russians. It had all an elaborate scheme to arrest one of their own for spying for the US.

Obama and Putin should take them out for a couple of drinks.
