The window of a shop in the Clapham neighborhood of London is seen smashed and taped up after riots on Aug 9.

The Guardian put together a database of court cases of those detained during and after the unrest that swept London in early August after Metropolitan Police shot 29-year-old Mark Duggan in the city’s Tottenham neighborhood.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said the riots “were not about poverty,” but analysis showed that 41 percent of rioting suspects within the judicial system live in areas that rank in the top 10 percent of the most economically dispossessed places in the country, with 66 percent of the neighborhoods in which the accused live having become poorer between 2007 and 2010. Heavy youth unemployment, child poverty and lack of educational opportunity were found in almost all of the areas where rioting was the worst. More then 90 percent of the accused are male.

The Guardian:

Based on unprecedented access to information from magistrates courts across England, the Guardian’s data project gives a new insight into the riots, shedding light on those accused of involvement, from their age and gender to the length of sentences being handed down.

... He [Liverpool University urban planning lecturer Alex Singleton] found that the majority of people who have appeared in court live in poor neighbourhoods, with 41% of suspects living in one of the top 10% of most deprived places in the country. The data also shows that 66% of neighbourhoods where the accused live got poorer between 2007 and 2010.

... The Guardian database adds further detail to these statistics and appears to confirm that the accused are overwhelmingly young, male and often unemployed.

win: Although not the education that Cameron imagines

The trial juries are operating 24/24 - 7/7 to handle all the cases brought before it.

The sentences being given are jail terms.

Just what “education” do you think is necessary? One about “political philosophy” to be employed in the face of crazed thieves?

Yeah, right ... or rather Looney Left.

Times are tough all around. Which is NEVER an excuse to riot in a civilized country. It makes outlaws of those who do.

We’ve had no serious rioting in the US since Watts.

If blogs are now “walls” ... then maybe what is written on them is foretelling?

The only “Man Bites Dog” part of this story is…

British Prime Minister David Cameron said the riots “were not about poverty,”

What’s hard to figure out is whether David Cameron actually believes this clap-trap or believes the British public is stupid enough to believe it.  Of course, if we Colonials are any model, surely the majority will buy into this bullshit.

Well, if this is anything to go by they’ve got plenty to riot about:

Britain has announced ‘sweeping austerity measures’- this will cause the loss of half a million public service jobs, it will raise taxes, cut numerous social benefits to millions, cuts budgets for government departments and transfers the onus for creating new jobs on to the private sector. It’s meant to save 130 billion pounds. But here’s the kicker:

“Apart from being a cost-cutting measure, the austerity program reflects the belief of conservative Prime Minister David Cameron that the present circumstances offer a unique chance to reduce government’s involvement in many aspects of national life.”

Cameron is doing a Margaret Thatcher all over again, in other words. The Labour Party opposition says the cuts will ‘trap the country in a cycle of low growth and unemployment for years.’

But the media don’t talk about all this, they’re too busy brown nosing the royals as they tour the riot sites as if they’re in WWII. Sarkozy is up to the same tricks in France, attacking the pensions of workers (what else?) and sending the police in to break a fuel strike. Cameron is in a coalition with the Liberal Democrats and I don’t know how much longer they can go along with this Thatcherite nonsense without feeling that they need a good long shower to remove the grime.
