Turkey Ratchets Up Tensions With Israel Over Gaza Flotilla Incident

Israeli soldiers in the West Bank village of Beit Jala stand behind a Turkish flag, held by Palestinian, Israeli and foreign activists, not seen, during a June 6 protest against the Israeli commando raid on a flotilla headed for Gaza.

Israel’s raid on a flotilla headed for Gaza happened over a month ago, but Turkish officials haven’t forgotten the divisive incident; in fact, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu threw down the diplomatic gauntlet on Monday by declaring that his country would sever ties with Israel if certain conditions weren’t met.  —KA

The Guardian:

Ahmet Davutoglu, the Turkish foreign minister, revived tensions when his strongly worded comments were reported by the Hurriyet newspaper and picked up in Israel and across the Arab world.

“Israelis have three options,” he said. “They will either apologise or acknowledge an international, impartial inquiry and its conclusion. Otherwise, our diplomatic ties will be cut off.”

Ankara withdrew its ambassador from Tel Aviv after the flotilla raid on 31 May, when nine Turks were killed by Israeli commandos who boarded the Mavi Marmara. But this is the first time Turkey has explicitly threatened to cut off ties completely.

Turkey should throw out all American bases and strictly stick to Nato and other countries for allies. American politicians will throw them to the dogs in a heartbeat.

If attacked by Israel, Turkey man for man would clean Israels clock.

While Israel may hold superiority in standoff weapons such as fighter aircraft and missiles if it got to infantry tactics and hand to hand, the issies are done.

Propaganda and hasbara only go so far and the big mouth typically gets their ass kicked.

Turkey wouldn’t be alone in its condemnation of Israel if only Arab governments represented their own people instead of being wholly owned subsidiaries of corporate USA.  Those doubting this need spend but a few days in any Mideast nation (aside from Zionist Israel) &/or check public opinion polls from that region.  Not so long ago Arab governments did actively oppose the Zionist entity, but that ended when Anwar Sadat sold out for around a billion a year.  Will the Arab masses rise up and overthrow their governments?  Don’t count on it until the American people rise up en masse in pursuit of a better world.  And then how the dominoes will fall!

Just broadening the debate somewhat. On the concept of collective guilt. The British, some Americans and most Zionists still hold resentment towards Germany for the Nazi atrocities. But most of the successful German football/soccer team was born on or around 1985. It’s a young team with an average age of 25. The vast majority of those responsible for Hitler’s Germany are long dead.

Now the Zionists are aficionados of the collective guilt argument. For example; the Palestinians voted for Hamas, democratic but, not liked in Washington and Tel Aviv, ergo, they must ALL suffer, they are collectively guilty. So the Zionists enjoy their collective guilt and apply it to existing countries and in the case of the Palestinians, a disenfranchised, mainly homeless people. But they ALSO hold it towards the Germans who are no longer fascist and a model of democracy today. This is as Finkelstein says: truly, beyond chutzpah.

Blackspeare,Mike3

The points raised about Turkey’s history are quite valid. There are few, if any,
regimes (governments etc.) that don’t have blood on their hands. If all black
pots did indeed take the maxim to heart there would be a deafening silence
emanating from Washington.

However, I do think the situation with the flotilla is qualitatively different. The
PKK are waging a guerilla war against the Turks so I would not accept this
example as having parity with the Israeli actions against the protest flotilla.
Your responses, in some fashion, further underscore my point. Turkey has a
very legitimate complaint that is well supported by various international laws
and standards. ( I know, no one follows these either but….). The fact that we are
now discussing Turkey’s past sins rather than the merits of its complaint
against Israel demonstrates this.

Mike3…You don’t have to go back 80 years just a few weeks to uncover the black pot.  The Turkish bombing of so called terrorists Kurds in northern Iraq and with American approval killed close to 200 individuals.  Surely there were civilians among them.  The reason Israel doesn’t mention this is because of the US involvement in providing surveillance information.

One other point here, sorry. With Erdogan’s storming out of the Davos conference, the Israeli’s can always accuse the Turk’s (as Israel’s president Shimon Peres did), of the pot calling the kettle black. They have only to point to the Armenian genocide committed by a disintegrating Ottoman Empire. But that was 80 years ago and now is now. What is also interesting is how much research American scholars have devoted to the Armenian Genocide. The genocide committed against the Native American Indians is not so well researched, as is the slaughter committed in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Not to mention Iraq and all the other slaughter and mini genocides that has accompanied the growth of the invisible and media silent American Empire.

As previous posts have already said, the importance of Israel for the West overrides lesser things such as being a member of NATO. But the Turks should take a page out of the Israeli book. The motto in Israel is; “never forgive and never forget”. So says the devout Zionist. And the lickspittle morons in Washington kiss their asses.
Erdogan’s anger at the way Israel treats the Palestinians is really no different to a Christian’s anger at the way Israel treats the Palestinians, or even the anger of many orthodox Jews in America who oppose Zionism. Injustice is seen to be injustice no matter what religion you belong to. The only thing that will override this is religious fundamentalism, fanaticism and ideology.

Good point Macmuir, the press is spinning it as Turkey is the one ratching up the tension.

Gotta love the affinity the worldwide Jewish owned and editorialzed media plays for Israel.

The turks should read NATO the riot act and remind them that Israel doesn’t have a military treaty with any one of them and Turkey does.  If the U.S. and others don’t step up and make some noise on behalf of Turkey they should remove their bases from that country.

Talk is all well and good. But what Turkey needs to do is take concrete steps to pressure the current Israeli government out of office. They are harming their own people more than anyone else.

Gotta love the press. Even the enlightened press so easily falls in the trap of
loaded language; unaware probably.

The Turks are the ones “ratcheting up tension” simply by demanding an apology
after 8 of its citizens are murdered in international waters by IDF commandos.
Unreasonable bastards!

If I were Ankara, I would be looking for a refund on my NATO dues. Fat lot of
good that membership got them!

Israel. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Let us not forget the dead activist’s at the hand of marauding pirates, in international waters with an illegal blockade on the Palestinians. Also, one dead was an American and America doesn’t have the will to do anything about it.

Finally, a country who isn’t afraid to call the Israeli’s and their murderous policies toward the world out. The US’s unconditional support has done nothing but encourage the Jewish State to continue its attempted eradication of all Palestinians. And where has Mr I-Believe-In-Diplomacy Obama? The murder and piracy on the high seas by Israel deserved a quick and strong condemnation but President Abysmal continues on as the lackluster appeasement toady of the Corporatocracy and the Owner Class he has always been.

Perhaps the time has come for Turkey to go full blast on a nuclear weapons program. If your neighbor (Israel) is emotionally and mentally unstable, and also armed to the teeth with 200+nukes, then it is probably prudent to take defensive measures.

Don’t count on Amerika! Aside from being fiscally and morally bankrupt, corp-rat fascist Amerika is Israel’s bitch! And if ethnic cleansing and genocide on the Palestinians is okay with the Zionist wackos in the apartheid theo-crazy of Israel… then maybe the Turks are next? Eh?

Give it some thought. Old Coyote Knose at least one of those Israeli nukes is targeted on Istanbul.
