Tsunami Kills at Least 282 in Indonesia

On Wednesday, two days after an earthquake-triggered tsunami hit the shores of Indonesia’s Mentawai Islands, local officials reported problems with an alert system that should have warned islanders of the incoming tidal wave.

Meanwhile, the death toll has reached at least 282, according to the BBC, and elsewhere in Indonesia a rumbling volcano is creating another kind of trouble.  —KA

Indonesia’s president has cut short a trip to Vietnam to visit the islands and oversee the relief operation.

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono flew back from a meeting with regional leaders to help deal with the tsunami aftermath.

Why are the so called “natural disasters” always hitting the countries that aren’t agreeable with the policies of the U.S. Empire or crossed them in some way? Has everyone forgotten HAARP?
