Authorities say a gunman opened fire Monday near Texas A&M University in College Station, killing a Brazos County constable and a civilian, and wounding two officers before he was shot by police. The suspect, 65, died while he was in custody.

USA Today:

Longtime Brazos County Constable Brian Bachmann, an elected position, was reportedly serving eviction papers at a home in the historical district of College Station about 12:15 p.m. CT (2:15 p.m. ET) when someone inside shot him as he approached. Police came under fire when they responded.

Assistant College Station Police Chief Scott McCollum said at a news conference that officers shot the gunman and took him into custody. Local news reports say, however, the gunman was shot after a brief chase. McCollum said he did not know why Bachmann, 41, was at the house.

The university, about 90 miles northwest of Houston, issued a Code Maroon on its emergency website just before 12:30 p.m. CT, instructing students and school personnel to avoid the area.
