Got your life back, Tony?: BP’s former CEO, Tony Hayward, didn’t exactly wow everyone with his leadership skills during the aftermath of the disastrous Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The BBC gets the ball rolling in this article about four big companies’ sub-stellar performance in 2010, and it should come as no surprise that BP figures in among that unfortunate set. But, dear readers, this list is focused on the UK and Asia—can you think of more from this side of the globe? We bet you can.  —KA

Have you ever played that game where someone says a word to you and you say the first thing that you associate with it?

If not, try these: Toyota, BP, Rolls-Royce, or perhaps even Heathrow Airport.

If the first words you thought of were along the lines of “car recalls”, “oil spill”, “exploded engine” and “snow delays”, then you are probably not alone, given the year each of them has had.

2010 has seen all of these companies face crises, both on an operational level and from a public relations point of view.

Although I write, my day job is teaching, so I am very happy to see this story. This is because my students, like many voters, have no image of the elephant in the room: the giant corporations that lie behind our ruined economy and the upcoming Congressional battles on regulating those who run their casino with our money.

I hope Dickens’ Ghosts from Christmas Future visit these executives this Christmas Eve.
