The U.N. Needs $6.5 Billion to Keep Syria From Starving

Syria’s civil war has prompted the United Nations to ask for a record amount in aid donations.

Three-quarters of the population could require assistance in the next year.

According to The Guardian, the U.N. raised only 60 percent of its June appeal for $4 billion.

The Syrian civil war began in the form of popular protests in March 2011. Since then, the conflict has turned horribly violent, with elements of sectarianism. Estimates vary, but casualties are likely well over 100,000 people, with millions more chased from their homes.
