The Ultimate Diet Pill

A genetically engineered obese mouse next to a healthy, unmodified relative.

Researchers have found a way to trigger a gene that causes the body to burn fat—without exercise. Mice tested with the wonder drug not only lost weight, but kept the pounds off while eating fatty foods. Needless to say, the same effect can be achieved through a healthy lifestyle, but who has the time?

BBC:

U.S. scientists have devised a drug that can switch on a gene to burn body fat, offering hope of an exercise pill.

Mice given the drug burned off fat, even when they did not exercise, and were resistant to weight gain despite a high-fat diet.

The ultimate use would be to treat people at risk of obesity-related diseases like diabetes, rather than offer a “no-work six-pack” pill.

We ought to slip that dope into Newt’s next drink, and then all sit around and laugh as his head disappears.

We have millions of hungry people on this planet.  Erosion, soil depletion and climate change can reduce the amount of food we can produce for our 6+ billion people.  A pill that could help people lose interest in food once one has eaten sufficient calories to maintain a helathy weight would seem to be a better idea to strive for.

“Needless to say, the same effect can be achieved through a healthy lifestyle, but who has the time?”
Try making the time before you take pills that no one knows the long term side effects of. Or do you really think the people pushing the latest “wonder drug” care about you or their profits?

While it “may” be true that some people become obese from overindulgence new research condradicts that claim, at least in some people.  A few weeks ago I caught a documentary on PBS entitled “Fat, What They Don’t Tell You.”  In a nutshell, the program claims that finding the cure for obesity will be varied.  In other words, obesity can be caused by several factors.  They have now proven that bariatric surgery works, not because the stomach size is reduced, but because it interrupts certain nerves and signals to the brain which control appetite.

To accuse ALL obese people of laziness and overindulgence is cruel.  This kind of attack on a “group” without provocation is unjustified.  We don’t know enough about what causes obesity to arrive at such a harsh conclusion.  What of the people who eat like pigs and stay skinny as a rail!  You must have encountered them in your life, so why not people who really don’t eat like a pig and get fat.  If it takes losing a few mice to save a human being, so be it!

I’m not a fan of mice I’ll admit, I see one and out comes the trap baited with peanut butter.  Works everytime!

John,

That’s right, and animals are more connected to God than most humans are. It is amazing that we can do what we do to one another, to the animals, and the earth and yet we are still loved by God and provided for by the very earth that we destroy. Although, that is probably going to end soon -by our own doing.

This comment is exactly why I appreciate the animals more than human beings.

It’s always interesting to see the supposedly enlightened liberal making moral judgements about overweight people in the same way that conservatives wish to make moral judgements about poor people.

Marina,

Much sympathy with your comment. The selfishness so characteristic of the human race has caused so much suffering that it has required even the death of God Himself so as to justify its continued existence. If you are looking for Jesus Christ you’ll find Him crucified in some murder laboratory like this one dedicated to the “improvement” of human health. In this case the needless - and crazy - overfeeding of mice to find a way for some self-indulgent pig to avoid taking responsibility for his or her excesses. Whether its vivisection, war or abortion,
much of the human race proves itself utterly unworthy of its creation. We’re told that in the next world the last shall be first. I suspect there will be a special place there with Jesus - who loves them - for animals abused in this way.

Different kinds of medical research seem to have different levels of validity. Researching drugs that allow overweight people to not exercise or eat properly does not seem totally worthwhile, but does have usefulness.

Other recent medical research that is more stunning and perhaps more legitimate is looked at in:

What about the people who have thyroid problems and the people who have weight they cant lose even while working out and eating right.  Being overweight is adding unessecary strain to the heart muscle.  Who cares if a couple mice get fat or skinny they are mice.  Tell me one solid thing mice do to help any other animal. They are good however in the spread of disease…  Get a life and go live in a sewer if you like rats and mice more than your fellow human.

“Researchers” continue to torture and deform animals so that humans can eat like pigs, eat things that are killing them, and then can sit around in front of the TV all day.

Humans are becoming animals and animals are becoming humans (chimeras).
