The Sharpton Primary

Democratic presidential candidates are falling all over themselves to secure the support of Al Sharpton, whose own 2004 campaign and his role in the recent Don Imus controversy have elevated his profile as a national civil rights leader. John Edwards, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton will all attend the reverend’s annual National Action Network convention this week.

AP:

Democratic presidential contenders are scrambling for support in what’s being dubbed the Al Sharpton primary. The civil rights leader livened up the 2004 Democratic primary with his pompadour hairdo and sharp, witty oratory. This election, the high-profile Sharpton, fresh from the fight over Don Imus’ derogatory remarks, is attracting all the party’s major candidates this week for his annual National Action Network convention.

The solid attendance—starting with John Edwards on Wednesday and continuing with Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama later this week— reflects Sharpton’s prominence in the party, concern that he might run again and the Democrats’ effort to appeal to the base, particularly black voters.

No wonder the event was being called the Sharpton primary.

To what depths can the good old USA sink?

We have Sharpton as a Democratic kingmaker?

Falwell as a Republican kingmaker?

The hell with gun control, we need a law requiring each adult citizen to own, and learn to use, a functioning firearm. As soon as that takes effect, we should organize a March on Virginia, to ‘talk’ to Falwell, then a March on NYC, to ‘talk’ to Sharpton, and put an end to this asininity.

At the funerals, we can provide a 200,000,000-gun (no kids allowed) salute, to discourage any other imbeciles from pursuing their fantasies of power.

And lift US from the depths.

Robertson, Falwell get new buddy. All the preachers are the same: selling their salivas for big bucks, for mistresses, for self-pleasures…But the majority of people will never be blind by their sugar-coated voice excepts their own followers !

Rev. Al gets the juices flowing.  He’s really persuasive when he uses his humor but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen it.  I’d still rather have him on my side that Robertson or Falwell.

Al Sharpton is no beacon of decency, but he most assuredly is not comparable to Trentt Lott, Strom Thurmond, or Newt Gingrinch. Sharpton is a media figure and should be treated thus. If you’re not interested in what he has to say simply change the station. Whereas these other gentlemen worked in our congress where they wielded much influence on domestic policies.Sharpton is not representative of the Black community, he represents himself and his views. Period. The more attention given to him the less he is marginalized. Simply tune him out, he doesn’t deserve the publicity (positive or negative).

al sharpton, what a joke. a self serving buffoon. why,oh,why do we as a people take assholes like this seriously? who told him that anyone wants to hear anything he has to say? why is he given any press at all? he is just as guilty of hate mongering as oreilly or coulter or rush. public figures generally make me sick to my stomach. the fools that get the money to run for office, never represent my outlook. the fools endorsing them have a lot of power that i don’t believe they should have. why should hilary, for whom i have no use whatsoever, pander to this slimeball? why would obama give him the time of day? edwards is,in his own way a statesman, why does he need to get the approval of some one like sharpton? how many votes do these people believe he can really deliver?

Another corporate media article.  Another chance to mention Clinton/Obama/Edwards while pretending that the Kucinich campaign does not exist.

Any and all that go to kiss the ring you can mentally remove from the ballot. Once again our politicians prove they have no bottom - there is no one or nothing they won’t kiss up to for a vote.

One of my big criticisms of the Republican party is that they pander to racists like Trent Lott, Strom Thurmond, etc.etc.They are by any measure a party that depends on racist voters as a dependable bloc.
However,I must admit in all fairness that the Democrats are guilty of the same sort of pandering. I remember Tawana Brawley, and the blatantly racial slanders uttered by none other than Reverend Al, and shudder to think that he is being courted by Dems as if he is something other than a piece of lying opportunistic slime.Damn ,this just isn’t right.
