Team Obama: Give to Our Super PAC

Newt Gingrich has his. Stephen Colbert has one too. And guess what? So does President Barack Obama. We’re talking about those giant, democracy-gobbling super PACs, and this election season, everybody who’s anybody has one—or rather, has one without directly having one, if you catch our drift. 

Playing on the theme of bowing to campaign finance forces beyond their control, the president’s boosters asked supporters this week to ante up for their chosen candidate and give to Obama’s super PAC lest the other side win this Citizens United-sponsored race to the bottom.  —KA

Bloomberg:

“With so much at stake, we can’t allow for two sets of rules in this election whereby the Republican nominee is the beneficiary of unlimited spending and Democrats unilaterally disarm,” campaign manager Jim Messina wrote in an e-mail to supporters last night.

Campaign officials said the decision was made after they’ve seen the Republicans’ so-called Super-PACs emerge as the dominant spending force in the early primary states. In last week’s federal financial filings, just one set of the groups, American Crossroads and Crossroads Grassroots Policy Strategies, reported raising $51 million last year.
