Tax Cut Bills Run Into a Buzz Saw

One of the bills voted on Saturday, extending tax cuts to families earning less than $250,000, was defeated, 53-36, short of the 60 needed.

Republicans stood fast in the Senate to shoot down two attempts by Democrats to extend tax cuts for the middle class and let rates rise for wealthier taxpayers. Said one Democrat after the votes: “This is the ultimate game of chicken.”  —JCL

Los Angeles Times:

In a rare Saturday session, Senate Democrats and Republicans remained at loggerheads over whether to extend the George W. Bush-era tax cuts to all taxpayers, ratcheting up the pressure on lawmakers to try to reach agreement before the tax cuts expire at the end of the year.

With Republicans unified in opposition, Democrats, as expected, fell short of the votes needed to overcome a filibuster and extend the tax cuts for all but the very wealthy.

An extension of the tax cuts to families earning less than $250,000 a year was defeated, 53-36, short of the 60 needed to limit debate. An extension of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts to those earning less than $1 million annually was rejected, 53-37.

Would Harry Truman have done this? I understand that
there always, in the end, has to be a compromise, and
that liberals are never, ever going to get all that
they want. That’s the nature of politics. The problem
is that Obama is not pulling out all the stops to get
the most progressive final deal possible. He’s not
out there on the stump giving the Republicans heat
for their unpopular positions. I think that both
Carter and Clinton, moderates though they were on
domestic policy, would have fought harder for, and
achieved, a more progressive final settlement had
they been faced with a situation like this.

There are a few mean spirited monsters that would not stand in the way if 50 million unemployable deadbeats were deported to India. They claim that India with a population of 1.3 billion could easily integrate them. But despite being an eyesore they are ours and should remain with us.

anaman51,

Close Whidbey Island of all the military expenditures there and I’m sure there would be plenty of funding.

The Republicans are doing what they always do, blocking bills that are designed to help the working classes until they can force the Dems to capitulate to their demands. The Republicans call this “bipartisanship.” It only exists for them when the Dems can be extorted into doing exactly as they are told. Otherwise, if the Dems object, they are “playing politics.” I’m sick of this crap, and I’m sick of the lies.

I live in Washington State, where I was hurt on the job in 1991. I survive on Medicaid and SSI. Because of funding shortfalls, our illustrious Governor, Christine Gregoire, has determined that the only way to solve this problem is to cut off Medicaid prescription payments for over 277,000 of the most helpless, desperate people in this state. We are being thrown under the bus. This is a direct result of the Federal Government, under Republican rule, having cut funding across the board for social programs during the Bush Administration.

I am ashamed to live in a country in which bombing and killing people in foreign lands and giving the richest Americans tax cuts are more important causes than protecting and saving the lives of our own citizens, many of whom have lost everything they worked so hard to attain. This country has lost its conscience.

Real simple, if the argument is going to be giving the rich tax cuts
so they provide more jobs for the unemployed,
then structure the tax code so that the rich only get a tax deduction
for each permanent job they create.
Otherwise the rich will just use their tax cuts to gamble at the
Wall Street Casino.

TAX AUDIT ALL MEMBERS OF CONGRESS AND ALL BUSINESS CLAIMING TO BE SMALL BUSINESS ABOVE $250K A YEAR. I want to know their LOOPHOLES. What is fair for them should be fair for all. If need be, I’ll take a tax audit when theirs is complete to show fairness. I just want a complete/truthful audit of all income-GROSS & NET. I’ll consider this a lesson on how to manage my finances and where to get my money. Who knows, maybe I’ll even run for office, and I certainly have nothing(I mean nothing) to hide since being unemployed for over a year and too early for SS which they want to lower anyway. I think we should declare Wikileaks a Political Action Committee(PAC) and turn them loose on our Congress. I believe we might have heard more truth from Wikileaks in their short limelight than from our Congress/Government in forever. Might be why they were run out of Dodge. Shades of the Republican campaign and history of their Presidencies.

It’s one thing after another. What is the point of electing Democrats who
cannot game the system the way the Republicans do? Are we just plain so
bad at the game after all these years. I am sick. Just plain worn out and
sick of this mess which the middle class and poor will have to pay.

Where is America?

I’m actually amused by the warped rationalizations that are bought by Republicans for pushing through their selfish corporate-bitch agenda.
The deficit is too high - but let’s not cut any taxes - or certainly not on the rich (over 1 million).
You don’t raise taxes during a recession - (unpaid for)according to them - but unemployment extensions have to be paid for. The push to bankrupt the public sector as a means to rescue the economy, is unbelievably assinine- since it is the malfeasance of Wall Street that was the main reason for the recession. I love the the brave new world BS from our media, and TD. Look at the photo. It “failed” 53 to 36!

Just pass the bill. If the Repubs use that old silly Filibuster, just pass an exception to that rule and pass the bill.

Or just wait and let the Repubs anger 98% of the voters by blocking their tax cuts. Its a win-win, unless, Obama and the Dems have wanted to extend tax cuts to the rich all along, and will claim they were “forced” to. You don’t see such logic at TO, I found it at the G2mil blog.

Time to introduce some alternate bills to negotiate with.

Remove the Social Security cap from the 106K where it is now.

Billionaires and Mllionaires who got to be where they are owe it to the many who worked to get them there.

It’s a debt one owes for living in a society.

All show.  In the end these sleazy Dem sellouts will extend the tax breaks to the rich for paltry short term unemployment insurance.  They are only voting as such because they know it will not pass.

I want call them out , I think i will call them heroes. We need the President Bush tax cuts continued across the board. There are many small businesses that would have suffered a tax increase they can’t handle had obama and the liberals had their way and been able to push through a TAX INCREASE on small businesses making $1M and up. You don’t get it.Small businesses drive this country!!! Listen to the voters!!! Oh, and by the way this is just one of many congressional votes the liberals will lose so get used to it.Let me make a prediction for you, Hillary will challange and defeat obama for the democratic nomination next election.Talk to you soon and don’t forget to watch Sarah palin’s Alaska Sundays at 9PM.

The line is drawn-publicly-the rich only take care of the rich by buying their representation and paying them very well for their votes. I now support the Robin Hood Theory. Steal from the rich and give to the poor. Anyone who can do it I support them. Please Republicans, you thumbs up and laugh at what looks like a political win for you, but you do it by spitting in the faces of the less fortunate. This is not a game to people. People are in need of Unemployment benefits you nixed until you get your rich buddies their tax cuts. You can’t, and evidently don’t, know just what it’s like to be helpless. There can only be a few bosses who control, and the rest are “At Will” employees who can be unemployed for near any reason. Then to see those laughing & smiling faces saying no unemployment benefits unless they’re paid for while allowing taxes to be raised. It’s immoral to me and you should be dealt with accordingly.

My questions to the States represented by these 42 Republican Senators:
1) Is this vote on tax cuts the majority concensus of your individual state that was voted by your Senator?
2) Is this “NO AT ANY COST” plan by the Republican Congress and your State Representatives exactly what you voted for?
If NOT(?)-What are you going to do about it? You have a voice that should be heard. You deserve to get what you voted for in the majority of your State. If this is what you feel is representation for the better of the country and your state, then you are getting what you want-Nothing. At least the Democrats are trying something and they have compromised some(maybe too much for me), but they are legislating at least. Step back and take a real look at what is taking place, and they all continue to receive large sums of money and health benefits for this. I understand anyone being mad and using their vote to express this, but to deny our rite of representation, well I could do better myself.

The Republican filibuster to force a hike in taxes for everyone.  Hilarious.  Now it’s clear that there really is no difference between the two parties.  That’ll help the economy, no doubt…

Personally, I would rather they let the tax cuts expire for everyone rather than extend them for everyone.  Extending the tax cuts for the highest income brackets is just too expensive.  The only good thing about the Bush tax cuts was that they weren’t permanent.  If the Republicans won’t budge, let it expire.
