Syria Warns Protesters of Looming ‘Massacre’

Syria’s President Assad is hanging on to power despite mass protests in his country.

Mere days after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad hit the American airwaves to claim his innocence in his country’s recent deadly crackdowns on protesters calling for regime change, his opposition in the volatile city of Homs was told of an upcoming massacre if it didn’t stop demonstrating in three days.  —KA

The Telegraph:

On Friday, the security forces tried to curb the unrest by issuing an explicit threat. “We have been given 72 hours to stop protesting, or they are going to hit us hard,” said an opposition activist in Homs going by the name Abu Rami.

Nonetheless, demonstrations swept across the city after prayers. People left the mosques and filled the streets, chanting “Syria wants freedom” and “Bashar is an enemy of humanity”.

Witnesses said the security forces responded with violence, firing live rounds at some crowds. By last night, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based group, estimated that up to ten people had been killed in Homs.

Abu Rami said the security forces were “going mad in Homs”, adding: “They are shooting everything, especially at people going outside from the mosques.”

~~~~ “Assad needs to be overthrown BY HIS OWN PEOPLE,
but isn’t this the equivalent of what Obama and
Netanyahu do to Iran everyday?”~~~~
absolutely. unless Obama has a dozen Iranian protesters
shot and killed, it’s a wasted morning and takes all
the fun out of his afternoon session of torturing
freedom fighters like Jose Padilla and Sheikh Omar
Abdel-Rahman.
from the article:
...“We have been given 72 hours to stop protesting, or they are going to hit
Abu Rami said the security forces were “going mad in Homs”, adding: “They are
was the ‘warning’ confirmed with the regime? not that I’ve seen - Rami’s words
are only his words - witnesses (?) - other reports lay many random killings in this
operation on roof-top NATO-backed snipers…
Video Reporting Possible CIA/Saudi Snipers in Syria
NOTE: This post is developing as readers send in information and will be
updated and expanded as new information comes in. We need some
translations and info on this video, and second opinions from Arab speakers
familiar with this network’s credibility.
Last Updated April 25, 2011 - No sooner was “Color Revolution’s Mystery
Gunmen” posted covering the use of provocateurs to escalate foreign-funded
color revolutons, when a reader sent in a news clip from Iran’s Al-Alam News
Network reportedly indicating Saudi/CIA snipers are in Syria taking out
protesters. Al-Alam broadcasts throughout the region, in Arabic.
It seems we’re not supposed to do anything about this and to remember we are not without sin. What are we then? Reminds me of the old relationship dilemma between husband and wife; she wants to TALK about her problems and he wants to do something about it. She doesn’t want a solution but just wants to be heard. I am coming to a place where I accept this is a shitty world and if solutions aren’t allowed on the table then I don’t want to hear about it.
In some ways this pre-announcement appears as a sign of weakness, not strength.  It says, in so many words, “I am not sure of what I am about to do, so I am telling you ahead of time, so that, if you refuse to be forewarned, and protest anyway, then it is not entirely my fault if you are injured or killed because I warned you and you could have escaped and chose not to.” A transparent attempt to transfer at least some of the responsibility.
Similar tactics are all too often used by negligent (and simple-minded) authorities:  “I told you yesterday that if you did that, I would spank you! So you did it anyway! So now I have to spank you, and you made me do it!”
