Explosions on Yeonpyeong island spurred a rise in tensions between North and South Korea on Tuesday.

South Korea has let its northern neighbor know that it is prepared to answer any “further provocations” with missiles, after North Korea’s shell attack on an island near the border of the two countries killed two South Korean marines, according to the BBC.  —KA

BBC:

US President Barack Obama called the incident an “outrageous, provocative act” by Pyongyang.

He was speaking ahead of an expected telephone call to President Lee.

The South Korean military had been carrying out an exercise near Yeonpyeong island, and the North accused the South of opening the hostilities—something Seoul denies.

The South says North Korean shells started falling in the waters off the island at 1434 local time (0534 GMT) on Tuesday.

At least 50 landed directly on the island, most of them hitting a South Korean military base there. In addition to the two deaths, 16 South Korean marines and three civilians were injured.

I thought he was supposed to be a right-wing fascist, you know, Bush III.

And where’s the gang to tell us that the shelling was really a Mossad/CIA plot
to make NK look bad?  I KNOW you are out there with your other zany
conspiracy fantasies.

what are you even talking about? i was referring to a comment which called
Obama a pussy and stated that he would deny calling North Korea’s attack an
attack.

in his comment, he also implied that the only people Obama considers humans
are Muslims. i made a joke at the end of my comment about how people think
obama is a muslim communist.

Both of the commenters statements are at odds with the fact that Obama has
increased air drone strikes in yemen, pakistan, and troops and afghanistan.

no u.s. president has any choice but to be a keeper of empire.  it’s not fascist or
mossad, it’s simply factual.  every president in the post-war period has
presided over an increase in military spending. the us has a huge number of
bases all over the world, spends more than the rest of the world combined in
military spending etc etc bla bla bla

korea, after world war II, is well documented to have been ready for self
determination as a united country.  the anti-colonial groups had organized
local government groups across the country. at the Potsdamn conference, the
allies, facing pressure from the soviet who had just invaded japanese
manchuria, decided to zone off the country into spheres of power between the
two empires instead of allowing for self determination which had been agreed
upon at the Cairo conference.

the communists attacked five years later. of course the blame for the 2.5
million dead civilians alone is shared by the ussr, china and the us as well as
the nationalist puppet korean leaders.

are the chinese warmongers? certainly, zinjiang, tibet, tianemen, and support
for myanmar and north korea?

is the us government, whose head of state is obama, warmongering? certainly, i
don’t know how you could deny this or why this is a considered a zany
conspiracy theory.  you can support the wars in iraq, afghanistan, air strikes in
yemen and pakistan, military training in the somalian civilian war as protecting
our dang sweet freedom, but you can’t deny that these things are happening.

Fate and circumstance beyond his control will brand Obama a fascist, communist, savior or impotent leader.

I think he has discovered in his first two years how hard it is to get anything done in Washington in a short time.  He is up against minions of monied lobbyists wheelin and dealin behind the scenes, swapping votes, backstabbing the majority, undermining popular proposed programs like single payer.

Lets all remember it was between Obama and McCain’t with Palin only a heartbeat away.

Jong-Il has what Hussein needed——a few nuclear weapons albeit inefficient, but an effective deterrent nonetheless.  Currently, the USA is perceived as a nation quick to military action——I wonder how that happened?!  The only deterrent is to possess a nuclear weapon.  If Saddam Hussein had one he’d still be here!

But, but Israel’s foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, wants North Korea taken
care of before doing the same to Syria and Iran, according to an Italian website.

It is “necessary today, more than in the past, to stop and to topple this crazy
regime, and to stop their proliferation and provocations,” he is quoted as saying
at a Jerusalem press conference Tuesday afternoon.

Lieberman, with visiting Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, said, ” North
Korea is part of an axis of evil that includes Syria and Iran, and that there is
close cooperation between them in the sphere of nuclear and missile
technology.”

“I think that North Korea is, as we see, a threat not only for their part of the
world, but also for the Middle East and the entire world,” Lieberman said.

Was Istael’s foreign Minister sending signals to Eric Cantor?

The BBC article, and virtually every other corporate media outlet (yes,
I include the BBC in this category, as well as PBS and NPR) leave out
the FACT that the US and South Korea have had ongoing war games
and naval exercises for months, simulating war with North Korea, of
course.  Who’s threatening who?

pointless internet warrioring -

mr rico suave, i am not sure why you called the president a pussy several times
and implied that he would not be willing to call this incident an attack.

“Indeed, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs on Tuesday called on the
North to halt its “belligerent action” and said that the US remains committed to
South Korea’s defense.”

And 3 of America’s four biggest foreign affairs problems would NEVER have come about if George W. Bush hadn’t made his idiotic, insulting, and ultimately destabilizing “Axis of Evil” speech.

Imagine the world without it:

1) We wouldn’t be mired down in Iraq. Period.
2) Our relations with North Korea would still be lousy but would be FAR better than they are today—and it never would have come to this attack.
3) Our relations with Iran were on the brink of a positive breakthrough as they were helping us against Al Qaeda and the Taliban, whom they also detest.  And, without the Axis of Evil speech, Ahmedinejad would NEVER have become the Palin-like President of Iran.

One moron speech and 8 years later we are looking YEARS ahead of trying to clean up the mess.

The nuclear witches keep stirring the pot.  If it’s not North Korea it’s nucleated U.S. truck drivers getting smashed during roadside layovers en route from one destination to another.

Nothing better for the holidays that heightening the fear factor—again.

“President Lee? This is Chariman Hu. Did you talk with Obama?... Me too… Yeah, he really is ‘sorry’. Look, we need to get together. Kim Jong Il is losing it fast and his kid is a total idiot. Their nuke program is getting out of control and I really need you to be cool… Yeah, sorry for your losses- my people are smacking Kim’s people as we speak. But, I’m not worried about you so much as the fucking Japs. They could build a bomb in a year if Kim keeps this shit up. Neither of us want that do we?

We know the Americans won’t stop the Japs because they get half their cars and computers from them. And I don’t need to tell you that I don’t want YOU to do a nuke either! I know we’ve had a checkered past, but I’m prepared to help with your security if you’ll tell me you won’t nuke up… Good!... Yes, leave the US troops there. They love the shopping and the hookers in Seoul… NO, No, no, please, your apology is unbecoming a great leader such as yourself.”

“Hello, President Lee? This is President Obama… Yes, of the the United States. Yes, once again, I am so sorry that our troop presence has provoked the North to attack you. Actually, my lawyers are looking into whether or not we should actually call it an “attack”. Yes, I’m sorry. Of course it was an attack, but 2012 is just around the corner and I have to look out for my base. What?... Now Lee, isn’t “pussy” a little strong?

Anyway, I just got a call from Chairman Hu and he just won’t let me help you defend yourself. So, if you can tough it out, maybe take just a few more hundred casualties, I’d really appreciate it. He assures me this is just training for his son. Sort of like boot camp, ha, ha, ha. NO, No, no! Of course South Koreans are people, too, even if they aren’t Muslim. And, PLEASE don’t retaliate on your own! Hu has threatened to stop shipping PlayStations and iPads to us in time for the gift-giving orgy of our Winter Festival if you do… What about Hyundais and Samsung smartphones?... Well, the buck stops here, Lee. Do what you have to do… What? Oh yes, I’m sorry. ‘Pussy’ is a perfect term”.

“Hello, Barack? This is Chairman Hu. Fine, thanks for asking. No, no, no! No apology necessary… Well, ok, I accept your apology. Look, before you think about doing anything rash in Korea, remember, we hold $1.5 trillion of your debt. We’d hate to start calling it in. And Christmas is coming. You’d hate it if I stoppped shipping all that consumer electronic crap your people can’t live without. Have a nice day. What? Yes, I know you’re sorry. Bye.”

“Hello, Kim? Chairman Hu here. So, I see you’re teaching your son Un how to operate rocket launchers. Yes. He’ll make a great leader. Look, feel free to fuck with the South for a day or two more, then knock it off, ok. I’m holding a bunch of dollars, as you know, and the more rockets you lob, the more worthless they get. What? NO! You can’t use your nukes you idiot! Remember, you may think the South is your biggest problem, but you do NOT want to piss me off. Have a nice day. What? Yes, I know you’re sorry. Bye.”
