Posted on Mar 3, 2010

A South Carolina lawmaker is trying to repeal the state’s Subversive Activities Registration Act, which charges locals who want to overthrow the government a $5 fee and requires that they register—with the government. You have to see the paperwork (after the jump) to fully appreciate its comic value.  —PZS

New and Improved Comments

We are launching a major overhaul of our comments section.

In addition to more robust spam filtering and moderation, new features include the ability to rate other comments, sort how they are displayed and respond directly via e-mail or in a thread.

Unfortunately, commenters will lose their existing Truthdig identities. It's a pain, we know, but on the plus side you will now be able to log in with a plethora of options, including Google, Twitter, Facebook and Disqus accounts.

Before launching this system we spent months in discussion with our top commenters. We listened to the feedback and we hope you like what we've come up with.

Please direct any problems or concerns to us via our contact page.

I really liked the examples of filed forms lately the article showed. hehehehe. Well, at least some people still have a sense of humor about stupid shit. And that can only be a good thing.

This is actually a much older law that’s only
recently come to attention.  It was originally
intended as an anti-Communist measure.

It’s a good example of what I’d call an “Al Capone”
law: namely, a law creating a special class of crime
that is typically unenforced specifically so that you
can use it to get a conviction against someone even
if you can’t prove that they are really guilty of
anything.  Don’t like that long-haired radical but
can’t find any laws that he’s actually broken?
That’s okay, as long as he hasn’t sent in his
subversive registration fee we can just arrest him
for that.

Having lived in South Carolina for 15 years, I can smell TruthDig yanking our chains! Three things tell me this is a joke:
1) It costs $5 to file. Hell, a box of .22 rounds cost $17! Whut th’ hell’r the kids gonna do on Saturday?...

2) The form must use a whole bunch’a letters uther than “X”. Ain’t nobody gonna call their momma in Savannah an’ bother her while she’s in her knittin’ circle to fill out more paperwork! She was ta’rred a’that back when you was in the 2nd grade!

3) “Whut t’hell’r ‘minutes of meetings’?”
