Soaring Food Prices Drive Millions Into Poverty

Food prices shot up 36 percent in the last year, according to the World Bank, adding 44 million people to the ranks of the impoverished. For people who spend most of their money on food, it’s devastating when the price of maize, to take one example, goes up 74 percent as it did this year.

High food prices may be caused by fuel and water shortages.

As Sandra Postel, head of the National Geographic’s freshwater initiative, told us on this week’s Truthdig Radio, 70 percent of our water goes into agriculture and because water is difficult to transport, local water shortages cause food prices to increase as countries are forced to buy the food they can’t grow.  —PZS

BBC:

World food prices are 36% above levels of a year ago, driven by problems in the Middle East and North Africa, and remain volatile, the bank said.

That has pushed 44 million people into poverty since last June.

A further 10% rise would push 10m more below the extreme poverty line of $1.25 (76p) a day, the bank said.

You State: “The food crisis, real or contrived, may have pushed 44 million more people into poverty.
And you can bet your *** it pushed about 44 more people into Plutocracy.”

Response: Alright now!!! That’s just hilarious and so a matter of fact, it’s just sick but more than likely true to the last[.]!!!!!

I mean, you know it only takes 44 million to make 44 turn into Plutocratic oligarchs!!!

Why?

Just look at how many people are willing to run for any office, knowing full well, they’ll have to sell out everyone of their so-called constituency to get in or remain in office!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unless you can prove G. Carlin or our premises wrong!!! NOT!!!

We most humbly beg all herein, to reflect seriously upon the statements infra!!!

How long will it take before people will honestly and honorable take up the mantle to either prove or accept our premises presented for their sanity and peaceful solutions oriented to recognize a Social Compact created for All Walks of Life evincing the Science of Right Reason???????????????

When their huddled (or herded) in masses, sick, dying, and diseased by their own failure to think outside the boxes they’ve been duped into subjugation with and by????

When they are forced to work little to nothing in return for their subjugation utterly designed to force them into oblivion???

When they can no longer afford to eat to work?

When they can no longer afford transportation for or traveling to work???

When they can no longer afford to by tools or clothes for work???

When they can no,longer afford water to work???

Geeze Louieeezzzz!!

It’s as if, everyone is begging for the proverbial “stones” to fall upon them! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_Guidestones).

Rather than to be solution oriented, when the solution is Standing right before their collective gray sickly minds!!!! When all they need to heal themselves, is food for thought out of their oblivious circumstances evincing the Science of Right Reason!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We sometimes wonder how it’s possible for this society appearing to walk, talk and claim reasonable intelligence, to come from our collective loins!!!

So we muster the Science of Right Reason once again, in what appears to be futility, to reach-out in the most honest and honorable way we know how, to fulfill our duty to our fellow Mankind, to provide solutions for those evincing any ability to possibly exercise the Science of Right Reason, via solutions created for All Walks of Life!

TDoff: It is more than 2 years. This is the 3rd year in a row with no increase to S.S.

Monsanto and GE and all the GMO technology is also to blame. Their terminator seeds they force people to buy actually produce lower crop yields, 60% don’t grow at all and if they do have smaller results. Thanks to D. Cheney, Iraq farmers are now forced to purchase their seeds from Monsanto, GE and other major corps and are not allowed to save seeds from their crops from the previous years for generations. India is also trapped in this new world where mega corps have altered the seeds so if they do cross into the unaltered seeds, the results are not good. In India they used to have over 2,000 different types of rice, today they have about 240.

As these companies keep altering seeds to not produce the next year if you save the seeds or else to grow something resembling franken food, there will be more starving. I had a corn plant come up last year. Well, it was sort of a corn plant in that it started out looking like one, it grew about 2 1/2 ft. tall, had 1 stalk with a weird tassel top which started to look like normal corn stalk tassel but it ended producing round orange/red seeds on top. A 2nd stalk came up next to the first and did the same thing. Then later this plant grew 5 more started stalks going horizontally at the base, 1 one one side and the rest on the other side of the pant. It produced no food at all. Just stalks. I still have it as proof of how we have allowed big agri to damage the future of farming.

There is a documentary called: “Life Running Out of Control,” where there is a lot of information on just how food, plants and animals have been manipulated with.

The strangest things lately are human genes spliced into rice pants and spiderweb silk that is produced in goat’s milk. Where do these people come up with this stuff. Just creepy and the thing is most people in America have been eating GMO food since about 1998 and not known it.

I agree that we need to reduce the human population drastically. But the now soon to be Theocratic country formally known as America, brought to us from the fanatic fringe of the GOP, Repukelicans and the T.P.er’s and their religious bullies and misguided congress critters who are making more laws to force every pregnancy to term, there is little chance of the population growth slowing down. Stupidity at its finest.

Bon Appetite!

Paul Ryan just learned about this rise-in-food-prices thing. And he also just learned from someone on his staff that most Americans no longer raise their own wheat, and corn, and pigs, and cows and stuff. And you can only eat so much grass, so most food has to shipped around the country to stores so people can buy it. Which, Paul figured out, means that since gasoline is going sky-high, shipping foods to stores going to become extremely expensive.
So Paul, with his usual direct, practical, no-nonsense problem-solving approach, just as he used for his deficit-solving Path to Prosperity budget plan, came up with the idea of teleporting food from the farm directly to the consumer. He was very disappointed that his staff could find no teleporting experts to support his plan, so he went directly to the experts the CrazyChristian EvangelicalFundamentalist BornAgainBoob members of the republican and Tea Party faiths always consult when they’re in a bind. And Lo and Behold!, Halllelujah!!, the GOPer Ministers and Preachers and Televangelists are all going to pray to (or threaten, depending on their bent) ‘god’, and have promised Brother Paul that they will have a teleportation food plan, just as they came up with the Path to Prosperity for the deficit-thingy, soon, in plenty of time for him to incorporate it as a basic part of his 2012 presidential campaign.
So, fellow brethern, one thing you can count on…with the Trumps, the Santorums, the Pawlentys, the Bachmanns, Paul Ryan, and all the rest of the freaky-right mix, 2012 is gonna be a HOOT!

Glad your realize that Ryan is full of “santorum” (see the Urban Dictionary).

hello. water is difficult to transport. move out of
the desert, dig a deeper well, or open the aqueduct
dam. it seems to rain everywhere else. i noticed we
are also surrounded by oceans of water. water is not
an issue, but driving people to revolution by
artificially cranking up food and fuel prices IS.
whom could be doing that; so the United Nations, or
NATO will save them? must be us. we are wealthy, so
it can’t happen here- but wait; by golly it is. let
us see…it’s not corn for biofuel, because there are
so many better nonfood crops to be used, and we have
abundant irrigation, and the best agriculturists,
fertilizers, engineered crops, industrial farmlands,
machinery: interconnected by vast transportation
systems, with state-of-the-art food processing
equipment and plants- it must be Bush’s fault.

In 1936 after Wall Street blew up Americas economy FDR passed the commodity
exchange act.  It was designed to keep Wall Street from doing the same thing to the
everyday necessities of life. All went well until 1981 when Goldman Sachs bought
commodity exchange company J. Aron. In 1991, under the First president Bush, J. Aron
wrote the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the CFTC, asking for exceptions to
the 1936 act, which would allow them to speculate on commodities futures, just like
stocks. Laurie Ferber, head of the CFTC, an appointee of the first president Bush
granted the exception. She issued a secret letter of exception to Goldman Sachs and 16
other companies. This allowed Goldman Sachs and the other companies to create a
new investment vehicle called Index Speculation. This has turned Commodities into
another game table in America’s Casino Economy and led to starvation and death world
wide. ( see Matt Tabbi GRIFTOPIA )

Rush to Use Crops as Fuel Raises Food Prices and
Hunger Fears

The starchy cassava root has long been an important
ingredient in everything from tapioca pudding and ice
cream to paper and animal feed.

But last year, 98 percent of cassava chips exported
from Thailand, the world’s largest cassava exporter,
went to just one place and almost all for one
purpose: to China to make biofuel. Driven by new
demand, Thai exports of cassava chips have increased
nearly fourfold since 2008, and the price of cassava
has roughly doubled.

Each year, an ever larger portion of the world’s
crops — cassava and corn, sugar and palm oil — is
being diverted for biofuels as developed countries
pass laws mandating greater use of nonfossil fuels
and as emerging powerhouses like China seek new
sources of energy to keep their cars and industries
running. Cassava is a relatively new entrant in the
biofuel stream.

But with food prices rising sharply in recent months,
many experts are calling on countries to scale back
their headlong rush into green fuel development,
arguing that the combination of ambitious biofuel
targets and mediocre harvests of some crucial crops
is contributing to high prices, hunger and political
instability.

This year, the United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organization reported that its index of food prices
was the highest in its more than 20 years of
existence. Prices rose 15 percent from October to
January alone, potentially “throwing an additional 44
million people in low- and middle-income countries
into poverty,” the World Bank said.

What a crock of shit anyone who believes in this nonsense has eaten too much Monsanto Corn .This has nothing to do with Libya but a lot to do with the Arab Spring .The price of fuel is due to the ‘speculators’ and the starvation of the third world is just a continuation of US Foreign Policy .The so-called Third World better get used to these despicable ‘pressure tactics’ and look towards their immediate neighbours for assistance and NOT the IMF or the WTO ,its better to starve now than starve under Corporate BLACKMAIL.

I guess SOMETHING had to be done to get Monsanto’s stock prices up…they have been tanking.
Imaginary conversation:

CEO and CFO together: Let’s do it!

Guess we’re going to have to cut down on Maize Burgers. It’s amazing that the tremendous rise in world food prices, not to mention gasoline, has not caused the cost-of-living index for US social security recipients to increase, it’s been flat, no increase for two years. Is that because the US considers itself in another world?
I suppose the elderly folks who depend on the social security that they paid for all their working lives will be OK, so long as they don’t eat, use any gasoline, heat or cool their homes, or buy anything that’s risen in price. That should eliminate all shopping as a hobby, and even reduce food shopping to zero.
They could probably still enjoy a full and busy life, selling their homes back and forth among themselves, those prices have gone down. But they’re going to have to give up eating maize, for sure.
You’d think this government would do something to help them. Perhaps at least subsidize training their dogs and cats to run on treadmills hooked to generators, so the old folks don’t freeze to death in the winter? And watch a little TV?
But then they’d need food for the dogs and cats. And you know damned well those of the GOPer and TP faiths would squelch any pet-food-stamp-program in a D.C. minute.
