S.F. City Attorney Calls for ‘Sweeping Boycott’ of Arizona

“The Grand Canyon State Welcomes You” ... well, maybe not all of you.

San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera drew parallels Monday between Arizona’s refusal to recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the adoption of its new, controversial immigration law. By way of sending a strong message in protest, Herrera proposed that San Franciscans “assure that their [Arizona’s] isolation is tangible rather than merely symbolic” by boycotting the state both in terms of doing business with it and visiting it.  —KA

NBC Bay Area:

Herrera, himself the son an immigrant from Latin America, released the following statement upon announcing the push for a boycott:

Just as it did two decades ago when it refused to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Arizona has again chosen to isolate itself from the rest of the nation. Our most appropriate response is to assure that their isolation is tangible rather than merely symbolic.  San Francisco should lead the way in adopting and aggressively pursuing a sweeping boycott of Arizona and Arizona-based businesses until this unjust law is repealed or invalidated.  My office is fully committed to work with San Francisco city departments and commissions to identify all applicable contracts, and to pursue termination wherever possible.  And my office stands ready to assist in any legal challenges in whatever way it can.

Where does a state get the nerve to enforce the laws that the residents want them to. This kind of democratic behavior reminds me of Nazi’s and the KKK. The people who oppose this are apparently of a higher intellect then the people who live in AZ, CA and TX and they should start dictating the laws their immediately. I think I might boycott your state now NAH NAH NAH!

Truthdig’s millionaire corporate sponsors are really pressing the editors to deep dig to trash democracy in Arizona. Why are the comments of an unelected, unknown attorney in San Fran news?

I need to give up on truthdig, another “liberal” sell out. Does anyone recommend a website that embraces pro-worker, progressive viewpoints. All this right-wing corporate, open borders propaganda at truthdig is absurd. Just read the comments section, and nearly all readers object, yet this trash continues to appear.

Ah…Arizona, evidently America is waiting alone for you, also. I just can’t help think that most of the residents of Arizona are Latino and amero-Indian. What’s with the white-ass honkyman? Like Virginia wanting to celebrate the sad confederacy, these white immigrants want to return to a time…when? When they were not in Arizona? The invasion was the white racists…duh. But as with all these nightmares the white man causes…like the British Empire real good, the indiginous peoples will enforce the whiteman’s way and do the worst to each other for a fist full of dollars, then discover how second and third class they are while scubbing the white honky’s floors. Let’s all speak Spanish whenever we go to Arizona from now on… or Comanche/Apache. Chinga tu madre baby!

Why not propose serious, revolutionary alternatives against capitalism which is creating these racist reactions anyway? Limousine Liberals always make these weak proposals without realizing a big chunk of the country backs the Arizona law, especially with an economic crisis still being felt, you have to fight these with real popular movements, not just Democrats in election season grandstanding.

It is a brave stand for San Francisco to take.  Think of the impact if all major cities followed suit.  The tea baggers whine about their ‘freedoms.’  This is the real thing, and not a peep from the tea baggers.  Gee, I wonder why?

States rights are a bitch.

The laws may be unjust, it’s all in the enforcement.

The Great State of Arinazi. Resurrecting ‘Jim Cadilla’ laws and purge them funky
voter rolls white boy. Oh hell yes Arinazi SHOULD be boycotted, mocked, sued,
isolated, humiliated, given back to Mexico, and slapped collectively upside it’s
racist head. The Arinazi legislation is about purging the voter rolls and keeping
brown down. Can’t be having no stinkin’ illegals vote now can we. Yeah, like the
illegals vote. Legal brownies will still have to PROVE their legality and that is some
powerful intimidating bullshit there boy.
How come Eric Holder ain’t said more than about nada? Hmmm, what does Eric
Holder do anyway? Oh wait, were Eric Holder to happen on Arinazi, he’d have to
show his papers and PROVE his American-ness. Sheriff Joe would have a field day
with that.
