Eggs were the culprit in the latest round of food gone bad in the U.S.

Here’s one form of big government that even some Republicans on Capitol Hill can apparently embrace: On Tuesday, the Senate passed a bill designed to crack down on food regulation practices in the U.S. after recent batches of tainted foodstuffs were unleashed on the public.  —KA

The New York Times:

The legislation, which passed by a vote of 73 to 25, would greatly strengthen the Food and Drug Administration, an agency that in recent decades focused more on policing medical products than ensuring the safety of foods. The bill is intended to get the government to crack down on unsafe foods before they harm people rather than after outbreaks occur.

Despite unusual bipartisan support on Capitol Hill and a strong push from the Obama administration, the bill could still die because there might not be enough time for the usual haggling between the Senate and House of Representatives, which passed its own version last year. Top House Democrats said that they would consider simply passing the Senate version to speed approval.

Both versions of the bill would grant the F.D.A. new powers to recall tainted foods, increase inspections, demand accountability from food companies and oversee farming. But neither version would consolidate overlapping functions at the Department of Agriculture and nearly a dozen other federal agencies that oversee various aspects of food safety, making coordination among the agencies a continuing challenge.

Thanks purple girl…You are right of course…Wall street is looking to cash in on
commodities, like they did Real Estate, so first they will use their tools in congress, to
help control the markets just like they did real estate. Since they won’t be able to
squeeze people to death they’ll starve them to death instead. That means eliminating
competition, and any other altenatives, like cooperative farming. This also helps those
that profit from making people sick through what they eat, the Big Three insurance
companies come to mind. Keep your eyes on commodity futures, there’s where the
financial crooks that murdered this country are heading.

G.Anderson: Good points. This also includes big agricorp helping to write into law the ending of small organic farmers, which also included the “little people” who have gardens in their yards. Big business wants to control all foods so they can put poisons into the finished products, then they can have their friends at big pharma make money off of you from the illnesses you get from eating their contaminated foodstuffs. Also they now can jack up the prices to unattainable rates, which has been happening for a long time now-higher prices and small amounts in the food packages, and they think we don’t notice that. When the food prices are beyond the income of the population, you will see more stealing, violence and other problems arise from the manipulation. This has happened in other countries, looks like it is our turn next.

JohnMcD,

I think it has gone past regulatory capture, if that is possible. It is at the point where the Congress passes very broad and vague laws, and gives the regulatory agency the power to decide what they mean. So, in effect, the agencies themselves are making the rules. Our Representative, “Liberal” Democracy has turned into a Totalitarian Democracy, where the bureaucrats make and enforce the rules for the large and powerful monopolistic corporations, and the smaller, more competitive and innovative, get abused.

The fact is, we have the safest food supply in the history of civilization. Only about 4,000 die per year from food, and that is mostly due to personal mishandling. But if you think one person is too m any, then you better put inspectors in every bathroom in every farm, processing plant, and restaurant, to make sure all employees wash their hands. It is impossible to legislate, or regulate all human error. Accidents can not be completely prevented.

More regulations provide more “cover” for the large producers. If something does happen, they can say, “blame the FDA, they approved our operations”. But we can’t blame the FDA, they are unaccountable bureaucrats, who can not be fired, or sued. On the other hand, businesses can be forced into bankruptcy, liquidated and held accountable. But, we can’t allow that to happen, because they have hundreds of employees, and thousands of people are invested in the company through their 401(k)s and pensions. It’s a catch 22, and it will eventually, overtake all reasonable semblance of a private company, and in the process, destroy all of the smaller companies. There will be a point of no return. The top-down, collectivized system of government and production, will destroy itself, and we will be left with nothing, but worthless paper to wipe our asses with.

More regulations and more power won’t solve the problem
of regulatory capture.  We don’t have a weak and
ineffective government - we have the world’s most
powerful government run by and for corrupt interests.

This new law should provide a lot of cover for the raw
milk and co-op raids we’ve come to expect from the FDA.
Don’t worry about those hormones and antibiotics
though…. they’re approved by a rigorous panel of
investors.

So, the FDA gets to hire more inspectors but Federal
employee’s salaries are frozen in an effort to save
money? How about not hiring more workers?

Actually no, many millions of American’s opposed this bill. It was a bill that many progessives along with conservative did not want.

It will actually do very little help the consumer, but will give the FDA expanded powers to write new regulations in favor of huge corporations, and pharmacuetical companies seeking to outlaw supplements and put small farmers out of buisness.

The senate by exploiting the publics fears of food born contamination, has only voted to strenghten the plutocracies power, not protect the public.

This bill will allow the FDA to define food contamination any way it chooses. FDA will use this bill to threaten and coerce small companies into signing crippling consent decrees that will deny consumers access to truthful non-misleading information about natural approaches to protect against disease.

The FDA, already, as a tool the corporations, has killed many thousands of more American’s than all the food borne illness and terroist acts combined, in the entire history of this country.

Dangerous drugs that the FDA approved despite clear knowledge that they were dangerous, included Viox, Lipitor, Yaz, Lyrica, Topomax, Lamictdal, Humira, Prolia, TNF Blockers, Chantrx, Ambien, Tamoxifen, Boniva,Prempro,Premarin, and Avandia. There are many more. They have killed hundreds of thousands of Americans.

Giving the FDA, more power is like promoting a crooked cop to police chief. The Senate has showed it’s inabiity to look after the public’s welfare.

Throw the EPA a bone too.

They should lead a national recycling effort.

Alot of polluters out there and money to be made from them.
