Low carb or low fat? Diet trends have led to diet debate. Luckily, some actual scientists are weighing in. The preliminary results of a small study suggest that some of us just process food differently, and picking the right diet based on a gene test could shed two to three times more weight.

BBC:

The researchers divided the group into three genotypes which they described as low carbohydrate diet responsive, low fat diet responsive and a balanced diet responsive genotype.

They found that those on a diet which matched their genotype lost 2-3 times more weight over 12 months compared with those on the “wrong” diet.

There’s an interesting post over at the Health Journal Club that makes the case that people should just not eat anything that wasn’t a food 100 years ago. Gets rid of the aspartame, bleached GM flour, high fructose corn syrup garbage they try to pass off as food these days. If interested you can read on it here,

EAT NOTHING PROCESSED BY MAN!!!

Yeah, and starve to death, what planet are you living
on, not everybody is so fortunate as to buy groceries
in some fancy wholesome(that is another word processed
by man)store and even less fortunate to grow our own
food. By the way this is one stupid slogan, everything
is processed by man even the grains in your super
healthy granola bar were, when the time came, collected
by men, cleaned, dried and put in the sacks to be
shipped to the processing plant.

Another group of scientists has warned that changing diet without engaging in lots of exercise is next to useless for losing weight. They have also warned that lots of exercise without a change in diet may be useless in shedding weight.

Great scientific breakthrough.  After years of research and after spending tons of money, they’ve come to the startling conclusion that people aren’t all the same.

It is true that people’s bodies respond differently to different sorts of foods.. saying it is “in the genes” makes it sound sci-fi or whatever, but it is true..

For example, many Italian people have an intolerance to wheat which makes them gain a tremendous amount of weight for the amount of pasta and bread that they actually eat, while some siblings in their same family do not have such an intolerance and thus are not overweight at all despite eating the same amount.

Here we go again.  We have an epidemic of obesity, as we’ve had an epidemic of cancer, and some dubious scientist comes along with a “small study,” touted by the press, that purports to show it’s all in the genes.

If it’s all in the genes, then how come we weren’t as fat/cancer ridden forty years ago as we are now?  Genetic change occurs at a glacial pace.  No doubt there are genetic differences in how we process food.  Also no doubt: it doesn’t explain the current epidemic.  This is how science gets a bad name.

It may be slightly off the topic, but the BBC is under a great threat financially.  This type of coverage proves how great they are… Who is attacking them NEWS Corp.
That said, I am one of those who need the genetic info to point me towards the correct food…

Think how articles like this would go down with millions of people who are dying slowly every day since they were born—of malnutrition, starvation, are nothing but skin and bones, subject to regular bouts with debilitating diseases and completely without medical attention.
Think of little kids born and raised on dumps where they have to scrounge for food every day just to stay alive.
Think mercy.Think care.Think justice.Think change.
            Think.
