Scandal Leaves Alabama Poor High and Dry

Residents of Jefferson County in Alabama are victims of a scandal involving banks and county officials that has rocketed sewage costs and forced the poorest among them to purchase outdoor toilets in the absence of running water.

Investment bank JPMorgan Securities was found guilty of bribing workers and officials to win a finance contract to upgrade the sewer system and now new county commissioners are struggling to make up for the accumulated debt and lost time. The county has filed for bankruptcy, but the bondholders involved stand to lose more than $4.5 million a month if the court rules against them and they’re contesting the motion.

Add to all this a $40 million budget shortfall and hundreds of layoffs and it appears that Jefferson County is in for a painful future. —ARK

BBC:

He says he finds it cheaper to buy drums of water from a petrol station and pay a sanitation company about $14 a month to remove waste from his “porta-potty” than pay the combined sewer and water rate bill, which some months can reach $300.

… “These people are going to end up rioting about this,” she says. “If they let this stuff happen they are going to get the biggest riot the South has ever seen. Over this sewer business. I can see it coming.”

SoTexGuy: Thanks to slick dick Rick Snyder the new repukelican gov of Michigan and his emergency managers, who are also buddies of his, they have taken over the operation of 4 Michigan cities so far this year. Mine was the latest, Flint.

Snyder has it worded so that big corps can buy failing cities for pennies on the hundreds of dollars and become the new landowners? The wording is so vague that even cities whose students do poorly in schools is enough to be sold out to the corps. We are not certain what that will mean for the people living in those cities and if we will loose our citizenship or if these cities will remain a part of America or part of the corporation from whatever country they claim their main headquarters is. I know it sounds crazy, but look at the Native reservations in this country, they are not a part of America, they are sovereign land.

In Pontiac, 2nd takeover under Snyder rule now has privatized the water for that city. This is not a good thing. The selling off of the state to private corporations should have been a wake up call to the people, but very little to none of this has been on the local news or newspapers. The main information of what is going on in my state comes off of MSNBC and I research it from there to see the depth and broadness of our takeover by the rich and corporations. Can you say Fascism people ?

So.. when will the creditors demand privatization of these facilities and services?

Waste water management and disposal isn’t as sexy as Electricity, or Toll roads.. but they have already privatized the parking meters in Chicago? To Dubai, I think. Sewer treatment (service) is next..

Coming soon! .. a PAY-TOILET in your own home.. it’s the American way! don’t want to use the service, Don’t. Eat less fibre! That will be a bonanza for the proctologists.. or just hold it ‘til you get to work.. if you have a job. Then you’re employer has to foot the bill for that..

Of course the use of a ‘free’ toilet will come out of your take home pay.. or be taxed as income! Like a parking space!

If that scenario sounds ridiculous to you.. Laugh it up while you can.

Adios!

In the 70’s we got 3 months of unlimited water for $5.55. Now we pay every month and we have had 2 raises in water rates this year and will probably see another one after the new year. Those 2 raises are about an 85% increase. So I now pay about $62/mth for 2 cu.ft. If I use 1 cu.ft, it is about $6 cheaper, so I figured I might as well stop cutting back as much and wash laundry 2 loads every 7 days instead of waiting until 10+ days. I have also thought about looking into those composting toilets I have heard about. I could bring in enough drinking water for me and my pets once a week from my moms house cheaper that using the city water. At they last crime watch meeting it was stated that the only income my city of Flint, Mi. has to pay for running expenses is the money from paid water bills.

I read the article further and they state in it “drinkable” water. By whose standards do they judge whether the water is drinkable. Some days the chlorine is so strong it makes one ill and to me that is not drinkable. My friend’s water bill just north of the city claims they deliver water “ready to use” and when she called and asked just what they meant, they didn’t know.

Jesse Ventura’s series on water being the next “blue gold” is spot on. The Bushes own property in Paraguay and under their land is the worlds 2nd largest aquafier. No coincidence that G.W. has his compound there also and Paraguay has no extradition laws either.Just think how much more the uber riche will be able to rip us off by charging the highest they can for a basic necessity of life. And there are places in this country where the authorities have made it illegal to collect rainwater that comes off of your roof in desert areas out west. The gov. claims that God wanted that rain to fall on the ground where your house is and therefore your cannot collect it for watering your garden, pets or other things with it.Seems like big brother who claims smaller government involvement with the “little people” still micromanages us anyway.

Again, same ol’, same ol’. Corruption, corruption, corruption. It’s always the same problem. The article doesn’t say whether the officials were indicted or not, let’s hope so.

They should be jailed in a northern state and required to use an outhouse during their sentence, that sucks in winter. They should also have to tote their own water by the bucketful for their weekly bath, maybe from a nearby lake or pond. And if the lake freezes over, let them cut a hole in the ice.(sorry, no ice augers allowed - too costly…)
