Immigration isn’t just a hot issue in Alabama. As it happens, France has its own unresolved matters on that front, and flagging incumbent President Nicolas Sarkozy is making it one of his big talking points on the campaign trail during his bid for re-election next month.  —KA

In a TV debate, Mr Sarkozy defended his plan to cut the number of new arrivals in half if he is re-elected next month.

Mr Sarkozy is trailing in the opinion polls behind the Socialist candidate Francois Hollande.
