Sarkozy Urges ‘One Voice’ for EU on Issue of Palestinian Statehood

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Wednesday in a speech to French ambassadors that he wanted all 27 countries of the European Union to speak with “one voice” in September on the issue of Palestinian statehood at the United Nations General Assembly.

Sarkozy also urged the U.S. to do more to foster peace in the Middle East, especially as the Arab Spring brings change across the region.

Most countries in the EU have not publicly committed to which way they will vote on the issue, but if a recent vote on trade legislation in Palestine is any indication of their sympathies (the EU voted 27-0 to open markets to farm and fish products from the West Bank and Gaza Strip), the Palestinian Authority can count on at least some Western support come September. —BF

Up until now most of the EU’s countries have refrained from committing on how they would vote on the resolution, saying that it depended on the text. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton was scheduled to convene an informal meeting of the EU’s 27 foreign ministers on September 2 where the issue will be discussed.

The EU moved closer to a trade deal with the Palestinian Authority on Wednesday, in what could be construed as a sign of support for the statehood bid. The European Parliament’s international trade committee voted 27-0 to fully open markets to farm and fish products from the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The vote paved the way for full parliamentary approval for a deal later this year.

Sarkozy is not campaigning for a Palestinian State, he is running interference.

Watch how this story develops. Sarkozy’s proposal is for a pseudo Vatican style State which is unacceptable. When the Pals refuse it will be “Oh well, the Palestinians never lose an opportunity to lose an opportunity” - Gallic shrug and Europe votes against full statehood. Result - status quo.

Granting verity to the claims of Mossad involvement, as well as the issue of
accepting excessive cash from Zionist Loreal, I still have difficulty squaring this
with Sarkozy’s public posturing for statehood for Palestine.

Sarkozy is owned by zionist Loreal and therefore not a valid player in Palestinian independence.

According to the terms of the Balfour declaration which Israel bases its independence that:

it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.

The Israelis clearly have violated this part of the agreement.

Ain’t no state for “Palestine” to create.
They have nothing of value to make or sell, including
intellectual properties, and they are incapable of
governing themselves. Hamas vs. Fatah anyone? These
people are, per capita, the largest recipients of
foreign aid money, most of which is squirreled away
by their completely corrupt and inept ‘leadership’.
Ste my ass. It’s just political smoke and mirrors
designed to put pressure on Israel without giving
anything in return. No recognition of Israel as the
sovereign homeland of the Jewish people, no actual
renunciation of violence and the use of terror
against Jewish civilians in Israel, nothing at all.

Not to question your claims concerning Sarkozy’s involvement with the Mossad but
it doesn’t seem to square with Sarkozy being in the forefront of the movement to
grant Palestine statehood; this would NOT be in Israel’s interest!  What’s wrong
with this picture?

Sarkozy is not Jewish.

Though he may be sympathetic to Isreal, France has always supported the Palestinian cause and his call for EU unity behind statehood for the Palestinians serves what purpose for Israel? Especially with its present archly nationalist government.

As if his marital challenges were not enough cause for concern, “Sarco the Sayan” has suddenly emerged as the most infamous accolade of French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The influential French daily Le Figaro last week revealed that the French leader once worked for—and perhaps still does, it hinted—Israeli intelligence as a sayan (Hebrew for helper), one of the thousands of Jewish citizens of countries other than Israel who cooperate with the katsas (Mossad case-officers).

A letter dispatched to French police officials late last winter—long before the presidential election but somehow kept secret—revealed that Sarkozy was recruited as an Israeli spy. The French police is currently investigating documents concerning Sarkozy’s alleged espionage activities on behalf of Mossad, which Le Figaro claims dated as far back as 1983. According to the author of the message, in 1978, Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin ordered the infiltration of the French ruling Gaullist Party, Union pour un Mouvement Populaire. Originally targeted were Patrick Balkany, Patrick Devedjian and Pierre Lellouche. In 1983, they recruited the “young and promising” Sarkozy, the “fourth man”.

Peter, you look like you’d squash just about anything you sat on.  Sarkozy makes a
hell of a lot more sense than Obama on the issue of Palestinian rights and
statehood or do you think that the Israelis can keep on occupying and stealing
land forever?

It is important that the full weight of Europe be behind the creation of a Palestinian state. The Palestinians cannot expect any great pressure from the US due to a very powerful pro-Isreali lobby in America.

Let’s not forget that these people have been driven out of house and home where they lived for centuries, are stateless and with a bleak future if they do not obtain a homeland recognized internationally.

Europe has given the Palestinians far more support than any other nation in the sixty years since their general exodus from Palestine (in 1948) when the UN declared the state of Israel.

The EU should indeed continue its support until there is an official Palestinian nation.
