He came to California to drop a lump of rhetorical coal on Walmart’s doorstep, and he went away in handcuffs.

Although disguised as Santa Claus, it was actually Karl Hilgert of Claremont, Calif. He was one of a hundred demonstrators at the Ontario, Calif., Walmart protesting unfair wages. Workers at Walmart stores across the country came out on Black Friday, possibly the nation’s busiest shopping day.

As discussed on a recent edition of Truthdig Radio, workers for the world’s biggest retailer are often promised more hours than they work, which keeps their annual pay at poverty levels.
