U.S. soccer fans watch the World Cup from a park in South Africa.

Harper’s Ken Silverstein explains “why I hate Landon Donovan” in this feel-good post. “Tragically,” Silverstein concludes, “it appears the U.S. soccer team will likely continue to plague the Cup with its God-awful soccer.” Guess not everyone’s on the bandwagon.

Ken Silverstein on Harpers.org:

Donovan also said, “My guess is there are not many teams in this tournament that could have done what we did and arguably won the game,” Donovan said. “That’s what the American spirit is all about.”

Do what? The only thing that matters is the final score, which history will record as a tie. Donovan’s remarks are equivalent to Paul Pierce’s saying in an interview after last night’s Lakers–Celtics game, “My guess is there are not many teams who could have done what we did. We were beating the Lakers by 13 points in the second half.”

Second, given that the press has been talking about how the Americans had scored an “upset draw” by tying “mighty England,” shouldn’t today’s result therefore be deemed an “upset draw” for Slovenia, the smallest country that made the Cup?

@bogi666
Which also explains why the World Cup is entertaining. May it never have “TV timeouts”. The largest sporting event is also a stage where the games come first, Which at the moment seems that no one has been able to defeat any of the teams from South America.

The reason soccer is not popular in the USA is because it is not media friendly, their are no interruptions during play for advertising $.

When it comes to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, team USA is simply blowing their own vuvuzela, trying to twist the general attitude in representing a country that despises soccer in general, and refuses to recognize it as world football. As one very bright sportswriter put it: “we don’t do ties”. Which of course reveals a complete ignorance of the structure of the world cup, where a draw can be just as important or significant as a victory. Which is what the jabber from team USA was misappropriating.
Remarkable draws in the 2010 World Cup? So far that would have to be New Zealand, who had never scored a goal in the world cup before this year. Scoring their first in the 92 and a half minute in their first match draw with Slovakia, and their remarkable 1-1 draw to mighty Italy in the second.

The US Team showed “American Spirit” by overvoming a two goal deficit according to Donovan.

Last year, Bazil overcame a two goal deficit and beat the US 3 to 2. Did the Brazilians showed American Spirit?

American hubris and arrogance from war to soccer. Just before the game with Slovenia two Americans pretending to be soccer experts were propaganizing American soccer when 1 of them stated; “Slovenia with 2 million people and the USA with 300 million people who do you think will win, it’s obvious the the USA will win”. American intelligence gathering of soccer is no better than the USG Pentagons intelligence gathering for war. The abject failure of America is so complete it’s absurd.The whining by the American coach, is so American it embarassing.

“Rooting Against Team USA”

Sort of a proxy for modern American progressivism in general, I think.

The USA soccer team Rocks!

by all means, USA should have beat Slovenia, and we held England to a draw, a game which the US could easily have won.  And it was a great come back, not just on the score board but in the style of play, it was a completely different team that came out to play in the second half, and if that same team comes out against Algeria we have a shot at making the next round!
USA! USA!, ps go CHILE!
