Romney Voter Drive Dust-Up, GOP Lawmaker’s Possible Prostitution Link, and More

Posted on Sep 25, 2012

47 Percent? Try 96 Percent: According to a 2008 Cornell Survey Research Institute study, roughly 96 percent of Americans have had government assistance in one form or another during the course of their lifetime. That’s way more than the 47 percent that Mitt Romney wrote off in the video footage of him at a fundraiser in May. The study includes social policies the government provides, such as student loans and Medicare. (Read more)

Registration No-No: Here’s yet another controversy surrounding Mitt Romney’s campaign. A video of a young woman who claimed to be affiliated with the El Paso County, Colorado, clerk’s office that appears to show her registering only voters who tell her they are casting their ballots for Romney has gone viral. In the video, the woman is asked if she is registering all voters. She responds: “Well, I’m actually trying to register people for a particular party. Because we’re out here in support of Romney, actually.” The El Paso County Clerk and Recorder has disavowed her actions. Meantime, The Huffington Post reports the woman is actually a volunteer for the Romney campaign. (Read more

Leaning Toward Obama: The latest swing state polls show really good news for the president. According to the numbers, Obama is ahead in the following important battleground states: Florida, Ohio, Nevada and Pennsylvania. (Read more)

Election Forecast: Never mind what the polls say. “Freelance strategist” Dick Morris told Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Tuesday that if the election were held today, Mitt Romney would win. Of course, Morris’ prediction is based on the flawed theory that 100 percent of undecided voters will swing against the incumbent (meaning they will all head Romney’s way), but to Morris that is probably beside the point. (Read more)

Nader Rips Obama: Ralph Nader held nothing back in his criticism of Barack Obama during a recent interview with Politico, calling the president a “war criminal.” He also said that as far as foreign and military policies go, Obama’s are worse than those of George W. Bush. (Read more)

Prostitution Connection Alleged: Florida state Rep. Mike Horner, a Republican, ended his re-election campaign after he was named in a legal case involving a prostitution ring. Although he hasn’t been arrested or charged in the case, the Orlando Sentinel reported that Horner’s name appears on a client list in a case brought against a man accused of running a brothel out of a home in east Orange County, Fla. (Read more)

Sticking It to Racism: Political activist and blogger Pamela Geller’s anti-Islam ads just went up in subway stations across New York City and already the Islamophobic posters are being targeted for being offensive. The ads, which essentially call Muslims “savages,” were covered with stickers that read “racist” or “hate speech” (or, in some instances, were covered in both). (Read more)

Video of the Day: And speaking of things that are offensive, here’s video of supporters of Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown (along with some of his staffers) mocking supporters of challenger Elizabeth Warren by making “Indian war whoops” and doing tomahawk chops. Presumably, they are making fun of the Democratic Senate candidate’s heritage, which is a point Brown himself brought home when he was asked about the incident. (Read more)
