Romney Takes New HampshirePosted on Jan 10, 2012
That’s two in the pocket for Mitt Romney, who, as expected, won New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary without a serious challenge. Ron Paul took second place, with Rick Santorum, near-winner of the Iowa caucuses, well behind. According to The Associated Press,“About one-third of Republican voters interviewed as they left their polling places said the most important factor in choosing a candidate was finding someone who could defeat President Barack Obama in the fall. Romney won their support overwhelmingly.” Next it’s off to South Carolina, a state where concerns about conservatism, jobs and religion are likely to trump electability. That primary will take place next Saturday, the 21st. —PZS Advertisement Previous item: New York Times 'Plantation' Workers Invited to the Independent Wilds Next item: Zuccotti Park Reoccupied New and Improved CommentsWe are launching a major overhaul of our comments section. GINGRICH v. ROMNEY:
On his show yesterday, Rush Limbaugh compared Newt Gingrich’s attacks on Romney to Ross Perot’s on George HW Bush in 1992. According to Limbaugh, Gingrich, like Perot, isn’t in the race to win but rather to spoil the chances for his opponent.
Rush was right about Perot, of course.
When Ross realized in June 1992 that he could actually WIN, he had to dial it back some.
That’s when he made those weird accusations about Bush 41 wrecking his daughter’s wedding and then picked poor ol’ Stockdale for his VP.
He still got 19% of the popular vote—just enough to spoil it for Bush, which is what he wanted all along.
But Newt vs. Romney is a different scenario entirely.
First, I’m not convinced that Gingrich doesn’t really want to be President, so that’s one big difference between him and Perot.
Difference #2 is Newt can’t spoil the nomination for Romney, it’s too late.
Newt can’t beat Romney. Newt can’t stop Romney.
That leaves the general election in November.
Obama vs. Romney, mano-a-mano (with stronger than usual rogue write-ins for Paul and Kucinich and the usual Greens, Libertarians and Justice party folk)
Here Newt might be HELPING Romney by forcing early play of the far-left’s cards against him.
(we’ll know this for sure if Newt calls Romney a racist anytime soon…)
By the time it’s Obama vs. Romney one-on-one, the Bain Capital, “Like being able to fire people” and $10,000 bet stories will be pretty shopworn.
Unless Romney keeps giving his opponents new material (a la Sharon Angle), he should be able to parry the attacks and focus on Obama’s record.
Meanwhile, for now it’s nice being Obama.
Strong Christmas sales, declining unemployment, some signs the economy is picking up.
The media is focused on the Republican in-fighting.
Barack can just kick back and it looks Presidential.
But soon enough he’ll have to answer the 2 questions that must haunt him:
1) How are we better off now than we were 4 years ago?
2) If the People give you another 4 years as President, what will you do?
My predictions for 2012

Payson - I think you’re absolutely right. It’s a great Rovian move: “attack his strengths” except this time doing so for the next year will, indeed, numb an already stupid public into thinking that Romney will actually create jobs in our great land of “freedom & opportunity.”

Most Republicans, at least those actually in charge of power instead of their
Report thisdeluded minions, know that Romney has the cash to fight Obama cash. Oh,
they decry his jellied stance on everything, but the extreme right wing anger
machine is more effective at increasing hatred of Obama than moving the
Republican party in the direction of some sort of pro-life, religious state, no-
government sort of country. They don’t want a big government that does
anything for its citizens, but they do NEED a big government of prisons, armies
and endless departments to keep us all in line when too many people realize
the whole system is corrupt.
The goal of the GOP’s malicious attacks on Romney is not to defeat him, but to
take away the power of those revelations when he is running against the Obama
propaganda machine. By the time Romney is facing off with Obama, the
populace will be too jaded and bored by Romney’s entitled, job slashing record
to care. They will be far more interested in Michelle Obama’s non-existent
weight problem or Obama’s “socialist agenda.”
Personally, apart from some superficial differences in skin tone and appearance
of compassion, Romney and Obama are two peas in a corporate pod. How can I
take any of the media coverage seriously when Santorum’s 4th place results are
reported far more than Ron Paul’s 2nd place. In an Olympic event, have you
ever seen the person who came in 4th placed on the podium and the silver
medalist placed out of view?

David Cyr - WTF are you talking about? Your “analysis” or opinion or whatever nonsense you write is utterly and totally without substance. If you’re going to criticize someone or something, just come right out and criticize the thing itself. In this case, if Romney is a white-privileged-never-worked-a-day-in-his-life-scumbag…..leave it at that. Going on about every other president in history misses the point…..........if you ever had one.

With the Reagan admiring Obama’s MoveOn achievements being a remote control murder foreign policy and a sickeningly sicker society domestic policy, the envious Republicans have MovedOn to emulate the “progressive” Democrats… their Romney being as devious as Carter; as degenerate as Clinton; as disingenuous as Gore; as duplicitous as Kerry, and as deeply depraved as Obama.

Oh please, Romney and Obama are interchangeable. As a MA resident, I can safely say Romney would not be the dangerous lunatic that people think, he would be a good centrist, just like some other guy I know.
If Romney wins the nom, then I will either vote Green for the hell of it or just stay home. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Big deal, Romney lives in NH. The real winner was RON PAUL. He is the only candidate who can bring change and you better watch him surging.

I don’t see how Mitt wins a general election. GOP has zero love for this schmuck. I think that while dems are a little disappointed with Barack, they hate Willard and what he stands for. In the end we will vote against him with vigor.

Romney always parrots the same old bullshit I used to listen to growing up in UT amongst the Mormons. It’s a type of rhetoric that’s part of the Mormon DNA. It’s a cheesy, banal version of Zig Zigler inspirational twaddle. They always go on about “freedom & opportunity” and the pioneering spirit and all that horse shit that comes from growing up white and privileged…..because there’s nothing that says “freedom & opportunity” better than being born on 3rd base….I fucking hate Mitt Romney and the rest of the uber-wealthy megalomaniacs running this country (or who want to).
