Republicans Take a Pass on ArizonaPosted on May 12, 2010
Get ready to hit those strip malls, party people: The 2012 Republican convention is going to Tampa, Fla. GOP leaders opted not to drop the balloons in Arizona, perhaps because of that state’s racist immigration law that essentially flips the bird at the nation’s fastest-growing bloc of voters. If they get bored of chanting pro-oil slogans or challenging the patriotism of the other party, conventioneers can check out some of the local excitement: So why Florida (besides the hands-on aquariums, of course)? The red-state-that-occasionally-swings-blue looks more and more important to President Barack Obama’s hopes of winning re-election. Of course, all that could change in the next two years, and it probably will. —PZS

hello. i was thinking about how the Republicants will bend over backwards to keep the Gulf oil gusher off the Tampa Bay area, and i have to read a diatribe on strong conquerors from Europe winning wars. i called it the spread of technical advancement. everybody whining about racism is denying heritage and tradition. you want to be socially neutered, go ahead: i am proud of my ancestry. i do not need affirmative action to get a job, and neither does any other poor slob. qualifications are all that counts. if your race disproportionately commits crimes, do not blame me. you can work together to change your environment, your opportunities, your disadvantages; and not look to burden society as payback. alienating yourself from your own race, religion, and creed is cutting yourself off from the group that can solve your dilemma. coming together can conquer all things. worthless people come in all races, colors, and neighborhoods. so do great people. national origin contributes to, but does not make; the person. no one is so racial that you can predict how they are always going to act. racism is an invalid superficial convenient misnomer of human character. it is a good brainwashing technique to rally against an enemy. you have to enjoy being manipulated by others to be a racist. learn instead to follow yourself, and be proud to be an American. Arizonans are no more racist than any other part of America. illegal is as much illegal there, as anywhere else in America. it’s not nice to bash Arizona. it’s a great state.

The whole Latino voter thing is a bit overrated. I am Latino and can say that speaking from within the community, sadly many of us don’t care much for politics, don’t vote, and will march against the Arizona law, but probably don’t even know when elections will be. I’m just speaking honestly. Plus, illegals can’t vote. We’re a very uneducated sector of the social ladder and that needs to change fast.
If you think about it, Florida has more than enough Latino votes for Republicans considering it is the main base of right-wing Cuban Americans.

See, here is the confusion rearing its ugly head. And this even
here on truthdig. It doesn’t seem too hard to me that there will
be more than just a few people who will ‘deduce’ that the fastest
bloc of voters in arizona are ILLEGAL’ immigrants. Besides, I
thought immigration laws provided for legal immigration into
this country. And by jingles, when I get stopped again riding
down the road and ORDERED to show my ID, I think I’ll just tell
the policeman than I am a wasp and deserve to be here in uninty
states of america cus we kilt them old injuns to take what is
rightfully airs accordin to the roman catholic ‘doctrine of
discovery’.
I know that ‘more than just a few people’ won’t appreciate the
dark sarcasm I use here to show the absurdity of what this
whole world is turning into, not just the prejudical united states
of america but the whole world.

“”“To understand the connection between Christendom’s
principle of discovery and the laws of the United States, we need
to begin by examining a papal document issued forty years
before Columbus’ historic voyage In 1452, Pope Nicholas V
issued to King Alfonso V of Portugal the bull Romanus Pontifex,
declaring war against all non-Christians throughout the world,
and specifically sanctioning and promoting the conquest,
colonization, and exploitation of non-Christian nations and
their territories.
Under various theological and legal doctrines formulated during
and after the Crusades, non-Christians were considered
enemies of the Catholic faith and, as such, less than human.
Accordingly, in the bull of 1452, Pope Nicholas directed King
Alfonso to “capture, vanquish, and subdue the saracens, pagans,
and other enemies of Christ,” to “put them into perpetual
slavery,” and “to take all their possessions and property.”
[Davenport: 20-26] Acting on this papal privilege, Portugal
continued to traffic in African slaves, and expanded its royal
dominions by making “discoveries” along the western coast of
Africa, claiming those lands as Portuguese territory.
Thus, when Columbus sailed west across the Sea of Darkness in
Report this1492 - with the express understanding that he was authorized
to “take possession” of any lands he “discovered” that were “not
under the dominion of any Christian rulers” - he and the Spanish
sovereigns of Aragon and Castile were following an already
well-established tradition of “discovery” and conquest.
[Thacher:96] Indeed, after Columbus returned to Europe, Pope
Alexander VI issued a papal document, the bull Inter Cetera of
May 3, 1493, “granting” to Spain - at the request of Ferdinand
and Isabella - the right to conquer the lands which Columbus
had already found, as well as any lands which Spain might
“discover” in the future.”“”

Given its popularity, a similar law will likely exist in Florida by 2012.
