Report: Army Leader Wanted to Go All ‘Psy-Ops’ on U.S. Officials

Gen. David Petraeus is looking into Rolling Stone’s story about some psychological-operations funny business in Afghanistan.

Well, this is embarrassing: It’s not surprising that two unnamed senators mentioned in this Fox News report about Rolling Stone’s latest Afghan war exposé “played down” the possibility that members of the U.S. military stationed in Afghanistan might have tried some woo-woo mind tricks on them to advance certain objectives. The accusation that one Lt. Gen. William Caldwell made such a request of some psy-ops-savvy troops spurred Gen. David Petraeus (pictured) to order an investigation Thursday.  —KA

Fox News:

Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said Thursday that the investigation will seek to determine whether the actions taken were inappropriate or illegal.

Lapan, while not offering any denial of the claims made in the article, said it’s not unusual for “psy-ops” personnel to be asked to do things outside their normal duties. For instance, it would not be inappropriate for Caldwell to ask one of the officers in the unit to get data on visiting congressional delegations. The critical question concerns what information was being gathered and how it was intended to be used.

Speaking to the general’s character, current and former U.S. military officers who worked with Caldwell said he is an example of a modern Army officer who was trying to bring the Army’s “strategic communications” into the 21st century, encouraging the units he commanded at Ft. Leavenworth, the Army’s premier training facility, to use social media, blogging and Wikipedia as part of their efforts to shape their message. Defense Secretary Robert Gates praised Caldwell just last week for his efforts training Afghan forces.

“If you had to line up the smartest guys in the Army, he’d be at the top of the list. He gets ‘communications’,” said an Army public affairs officer familiar with Caldwell.

Oh please - when it comes to these stone stupid wars - the American people were psy-opped by the cynically corrupt oligarch-pandering administration (both Dem and Rep) and their media shill. Adolf Hitler’s clever tactic of repeating lies often enough works on the fearful populace.

Never underestimate the power of the live demonstration to what a tremenous waste of money the Pentagon exhibits on a daily basis.

Nothing that madison ave isn’t doing to the people of this
country through their beloved msm and huge road side
propaganda venues daily, hourly, by the minute and second.
Pure razzle-dazzle, balderdash enticements to sway
compulsions and distort decisions.

Big objective here is to try to get members of congress to toe the
military industrial complex line. Also shows the nonexistence of
some sort of military action against another sovereign nation
except for robbing that nation of its natural resources,
something the u.s. isn’t capable of doing in any diplomatic or
straight forward business venture.

This is as old as the age of human awareness. Coming from
earliest religions and governments to ‘control’ the masses.
Control the recources, the rhetoric, beliefs and ideology to make
those masses ‘see it your way’.

Hear it for yourselves… these military bozos have balls as big and as tough as a Sherman tank, and that’s because THEY KNOW THEY ARE THE BOSS!  The buck stops / starts with them!!! Not the shell in the office of ‘presidente internacional!’

Takes a bit to upload, so click on the movie icon and either here the entire 60 min interview, or wait a few after clicking to get to the halfway point, where he starts to describe his findings and his book: Bomb Power.

Isn’t it.  I read some statement by a senator huffing and puffing about how no psy-ops could affect him; he was already a big supporter of the war.  Just when it seems our great leaders can’t get dumber or more ridiculous, they prove us wrong again.

In this skewed, alternate reality we inhabit here in the US, doesn’t it seem normal that a top US Army PR officer would describe a psychotic, amoral US Army General as ‘One of the smartest people in the army’?

Rumors are rife that in the Pentagon’s plans for maintaining the current 100-year wars in progress in Iraq and Afghanistan, is the deployment of tanks and drones armed with nuclear tactical weapons to circle the US Capitol 24/7, in the event some Congressperson has the audacity to introduce a bill to reduce funding for our foreign military debacles. And should, ‘god’ forbid, the bill seem to be gaining support, the tank and drone operators have instructions to open their sealed orders, and attack the offices and residences of the legislators involved, as a ‘deterrent’. Could this be true? And if true, what are the chances that the brave, intrepid ‘reporters’ in our MSM will discover and reveal this truth to the US public?

The majority of (D)emocrats *and* (R)epublicans couldn’t have cared less when Army PSYOPS officers were scampering around CNN and NPR studios while Clinton was accomplishing a PNAC goal by bombing Kosovo for 78 days without UN approval.

So if history is a guide this story will probably fade by Saturday Afternoon and be forgotten until some blogger 4 years from now posts a link to it and 9 people will read about it and shake their head.

And by then we will be told on a daily basis that we need to kick the 529 remaining Taliban out of Pakistan (just 30,000 more troops please).

Rome wasn’t built in a day.

@gerard:

It would be nice to know exactly what they were trying
to accomplish and what tactis they were using, but if
the senators are staying anonymous and shying away from
the details, it is probably something that they don’t
*really* want to talk about.  They probably just wish
the military would only use this against people who
aren’t sitting in power from D.C.

seems Gen. Petraeus (or his handlers) alerted to the short fuse, quickly burning
down, on this thing and got out in front of it - calling, himself, for the
investigation, rather than being swept up in it

remember, he is being groomed by neocons to run in 2012 (regardless what he
says on talk shows) - he won’t reach for it - too vulgar - he’ll be drafted - the
thinking-man’s war monger - the Victor of Mesopotamia - the next Eisenhower -
to save the empire from the feckless, failed Obama - the wannabe next Kennedy

also, he’s nobody’s fool - the whole operation could have been designed to take
him unawares - nip his candidacy in the bud

hard to say - too much smoke - too many mirrors

Once again, the side of money over human blood is caught rearing it’s ugly
head -
fund the war- make more weapons - kill more humans.

It just never ceases to shock me the amount violent acts against humans that
takes place on this planet. Are people really so caught up in their quest for
more material things and fear of their future that they must do this? And then
make fun of the ones killed because of their race? Or make fun of the people
defending the innocents killed during their war campaigns?

I’m so sick of it all. I can’t wait to be dead. It’s as if I’m re-living some horrid
Twilight Zone episode over and over.

It’s difficult to tell from this article just what “psy-ops” techniques they are talking about. Worst scenario might be trying to, for instance, get the Senators and Representatives on tour drunk enough to seriously misbehave or divulge personal secrets that could be then used to blackmail them into voting unlimited Pentagon funds on demand.
I hardly think they are talking about water-boarding McCain or Kerry or Joe Jerk from midstate Kentucky—but, while the possibility might be attractive to some of us, I would advise against it.
Much better to just release a few more leaks of political inanities and then “take down” PayPal so it can’t collect any legal defense funds for the leakers or for the victimized politicians.
