Rangel Leaves His Own Ethics Hearing

Rangel walks: The New York congressman departs after appearing before the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct in Washington on Monday.

Making a move that, while certainly bold, may not help his case much in the end, Rep. Charles Rangel decided to peace out of a House ethics committee meeting as members deliberated over charges of ethics violations against Rangel himself.  —KA

The New York Times:

Mr. Rangel, who appeared at the inquiry alone, stunned the packed hearing room by walking out after complaining that he had no lawyer because he could not afford the millions of dollars in legal fees he had racked up during the two-year investigation.

After declaring that “I respectfully withdraw from these proceedings,” Mr. Rangel shook hands with the lawyers for the ethics committee who were preparing to lay out the case against him and strode steadily out of the room. But after meeting privately, committee members resumed the proceedings without Mr. Rangel, a Democrat who has represented Harlem for four decades.

macwhirr: I agree. I used to watch Charlie on c-span and always liked him.

Seems to me there is a purge going on by the neo-liberals to oust the REAL liberals/progressives.

If I were a member of congress I would try to rally the troops and have everyone walk out until this witch hunt ceases.

This is going to come back and bite Obummer in the arse, big time.

Attn rico, suave: Rangel has spent $2 Million on lawyer
fees since this whole farce began. He has exhausted his
funds, and cannot accept pro bono representation
because that would be considered a campaign
contribution by the lawyer. I live outside his
district, and I love Rangel for being one of the few
congressmen that have stood up to the insanity of
bailing out Wall Street while shutting down the rest of
the nation. I believe that is precisely why he is being
lynched.

““Accordingly, I shall not seek, and I will not
accept, the nomination of my party for another term
as your President.”
I was on a bus in a Kalamazoo road stop on the way
back from canvassing in Wisconsin for Gene McCarthy
when I saw this come up on the TV screen in a Big
Boy, if memory serves….
The high point in my political life, up to that
moment. The real high point would come in Chicago at
the Convention when I was McCarthy National Staff and
dropped fishbones and ashtrays on the Chicago cops 15
floors below me in the Hilton Hotel. They came up a
few hours later with a shovel holding the fishbones
and broken ashtrays—-I was locked in my hotel room
and slept through the whole affair. You can read
about it in Making of the President, 1968, pp. 308-
309…!

“He was a member of the all-black 503rd Field Artillery Battalion in the 2nd Infantry Division.[11] In late November 1950, this unit was caught up in heavy fighting in North Korea as part of the U.N. forces retreat from the Yalu River. In the Battle of Kunu-ri, Rangel was part of a vehicle column that was trapped and attacked by the Chinese Army.[11] In the subzero cold, Rangel was injured by shrapnel from a Chinese shell.[12] Some U.S. soldiers were being taken prisoner, but others looked to Rangel, who though only a private first class had a reputation for leadership in the unit. Rangel led some 40 men from his unit, during three days of freezing weather, out of the Chinese encirclement; nearly half of the battalion was killed in the overall battle.[13] Rangel was awarded a Purple Heart for his wounds and the Bronze Star with Valor for his actions in the face of death.[14] His Army unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation,[15] the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, and three battle stars.[14] In 2000, Rangel reflected with CBS News that ‘Since Kunu Ri – and I mean it with all my heart, I have never, never had a bad day.’[11]”

Obama Orders Rangel to Quit; LaRouche Responds
July 31, 2010 • 8:51AM

President Obama used an interview aired Friday evening on ‘CBS Evening News,’ to order embattled 40-year New York Congressman and Korean War hero Charles Rangel to quit. ‘I think Charlie Rangel served a very long time and served his constituents very well, but these allegations are very troubling,’ Obama told CBS. ‘He’s somebody who’s at the end of his career. Eighty years old. I’m sure that what he wants is to be able to end his career with dignity. And my hope is that it happens.’

Lyndon LaRouche responded, ‘It’s hard to tell what he means, because he’s a mental case. From any person more sane, you would have to say this is a death threat.’ (I.e., ‘death with dignity.’)

A person close to Rangel told Politico the Congressman ‘doesn’t give a damn about what the President thinks about this,’ and won’t resign. Another source close to Rangel added that Obama’s ‘statement comes as no surprise to us. We’re not surprised by this; we’ve known the people in the White House have felt this way for a while, but this doesn’t change anything for us.’

LaRouche added further: ‘Rangel will fight; he is a soldier who fought with honor in Korea. Obama is making a big mistake, which goes together with his lack of character.’

In a related development, another African-American congressperson and Hillary Clinton supporter targetted by Obama’s House ‘Ethics’ Committee, Maxine Waters of California, has chosen to go through an Ethics Committee ‘trial,’ like the one against Rangel, rather than admit to alleged ethics violations, Politico reported last night.”

This has been going on for, what, two years? And today Charlie says, “Hey, give me some time to find a lawyer.” What a sleazebag. Is there anybody outside his district who likes this guy?
