King Abdullah has announced plans to hand out $37 billion in benefits to middle- and lower-income Saudis.

U.S. ally and oil-rich Middle East monarchy Saudi Arabia has responded to domestic dissent by slapping a ban on public demonstrations.

Saudi King Abdullah, meantime, announced that the government will dole out $37 billion in citizen benefits, apparently in an attempt to dampen dissent. —JCL

Al-Jazeera English:

Saudi Arabia has banned all protests and marches following recent anti-government protests in the kingdom’s east, reports say.

State television on Saturday quoted the interior ministry as saying that security forces would use all measures to prevent any attempt to disrupt public order.

The ban on public demonstrations comes amid media reports of a huge mobilisation of Saudi troops in Shia-dominated provinces in order to quell any possible uprising.

Your US tax dollars at work: King Abdullah will use his US-trained and equipped ‘Security Forces’ to prevent Saudi citizens from demonstrating against his British-appointed Monarchy in favor of democracy and freedom. But hey, the King’s an ‘Ally’, so we should support him, right? One of these days we’re gonna get what’s coming to us, and it’s gonna hurt…a LOT!

If Ol’King Abdullah passes out $37B, that’s about $1.2K for every man, woman and child in the Kingdom. So there are going to be a lot of Saudis trying to figure out how to spread the rumors that massive demonstrations and dissent are imminent, to keep the honey-pot flowing, without having their heads severed from their necks.

they are medeviilists living with 13th century values. also, living in a palace and in
absolute luxury will not be something they give up easily.
so here we go again with the broken record media carping about the price of gas.
if the repugs hadnt blocked progress in renewable energy from the 70’s to the
present we wouldnt care about these loonies at all
I will not forget what they have done and continue to do.

I dislike the Saudi model of governance more than those of Israel and Palestine.  It is oppressive, theocratic and denies many their human rights.

I can care less about Egypt, Libya, Algeria but to hear about Saudi uprisings brings a smile.

If Saudi goes Boom twill be a severe blow to neo-liberal capitalism. Could it actually survive a hundred percent rise in oil price?

US Ally ? Last time I looked a big hunk of what we call the terrorist’s organizations have their roots in this ally of our’s, most of the hijackers on 9-11 were from our Ally , Bin Laden himself was from there , the Bush family has been in bed with this our Ally for along time. With Ally’s like this, who needs enemies ?
